The general impression people have is that a person who reads a lot is automatically intelligent. However, is it a fact that an intelligent person reads more or does reading make a person intelligent?

Anyone can read as much as they want but an intelligent person would try to know in between the lines of the text and try to make new concepts out of it. It solely depends on the person, not exactly on the action of reading itself.

I work with special need children. My younger daughter struggles with dyslexia but her IQ lies in superior intelligence. Reading is a skill. She struggles with reading but no one can doubt her superior intelligence in field of Music, Art, Theatre and Cooking. She is outstanding in those areas and beams with pride for her achievements. She is much slower at reading but can express beautifully through stories and stick drawing or illustration. If we ignore mirror images and spelling errors, her sentence structure and choice of words is much beyond her age. She has developed her vocabulary by listening to the books that my elder daughter, my husband and I have read to her. My elder one reads voraciously. She also wants to read like her sister but her limitations due to dyslexia hampers it. But she is very intelligent

Of course dyslexia and intelligence has no connection as such but sometimes ADHD might also be the cause of dyslexia from what i perceive ..How old is your daughter ? I was reading that dyslexia is quite common and as the childbecomes an adult it hardly has any impact on the adult personality . Found this article on the net ..

I know . Dyslexia is not a sign of low  intelligence or laziness.. Some Doctors refer it as a reading disorder. Dyslexia may affect  speaking..  Your daughter's brilliance in the fields of Art, Cooking etc is really astonishing and amazing. In this connection I must say ,your hubby and, your elder daughter's efforts are really commendable. I pray the almighty  to make your daughter normal.

Perception can be through books or life experience s which add on to ones wisdom and intelligence. Whereas someone might look at an accident as an unfortunate event , an intelligent mind would focus on why and how it happened and what steps can be taken to prevent it in the future!

Thanks for your concern. She is normal. There is nothing we wish to change about her and we feel proud to have her. She is highly talented and differently abled. We love her uniqueness and have never wished for her to be normal or mainstream. Dyslexia is not curable. It is a life long companion

As you please Arunuma. I cant but appreciate you

I believe that a well listened person is very much intelligent.

I think the movie Tare Zamin Pe was on dyslexia and brought out beautifully the need to understand and support them. Our best wishes are with you and your dear daughter, Arunima.

Her courage is exemplary. Arunima refused to yield to the adverse conditions , She fought and won

As above mentioned a well listened person is a good intelligent as it provides time for the brain to think what are the utterances of the person upfront and it provides time for the same person to understand the matter empathetically.

I guess you have to dramatise everything ..

An achievement is viewed in different ways by different people. Accordingly a member expresses his appreciation towards achiever.

I just came to know through one of my colleagues that she read about a 4 year old who has read more than 1000 books. I was shocked. I could not react as I do not know, it is good or bad. I have asked her to get me that piece of information. If I get it I will share it.

It hardly matters because a four child will not be able to absorb what it reads so what's the point in being able to read any number of books? I think it is  a girl called Daliyah something from Georgia , because I seem to remember having seen the video on YouTube

One needs to be cautious while treating a child as prodigy. There have been many cases all over the world where parents have claimed their child to be a prodigy and later turns out that the parents have trained the child rigorously for the fame.

As rightly mentioned by Usha just reading books without understanding and digesting the content is no use.

In my own home, my daughter used to read Books for her child, before the child goes to sleep. It is the responsibility of the parents to make the child understand the contents of the book

I also feel that in most schools the method of learning by heart results in the students scoring high marks because of the set curriculum which does not stray beyond the subject matter..Later the same top ranking students come up with very mediocre performance when it is question of competetive exams where you need to use your analytical skills..

Not necessarily ,if you are suggesting and confining, constricting reading to books only!Intelligence is a cognitive, mental process which may be aided by a host of sources of which books form an important one but denial access to them in no way makes one less intelligent if he or she is capable of enriching himself or herself through superior cognitive powers. It is equally important to bear intelligence existed before physical books. Thousands of years back marks of intelligence shone gloriously independent of books!
