The Natonal Commission for Women (NCW) is unilikely to favour the proposal for raising the marriageable age for men and women as mooted by its Kerala counterpart, according to NWC chairperson Girija Vyas. The Commission was of the view that the present age limit of 18 for women and 21 for men should be maintained, Vyas told a press meet here today. 'The Commission is of the opinion that the existing age
limit should be remained.
One should not marry before adulthood. The present age restrictions are reasonable and these guard against child marriage. There is no justification in further raising the marriageable age. The adult men and women should be free to decide when to marry.

There are could be little scope for disagreement on retaining the present threshold but the administration is very lax in enforcing it as under-age marriages are still taking place in various parts of the country!
