Onions are not in the list of essential commodities. So no check on hoarders. Consequently the price rise. Rumor of its price touching Rs. 100/- The media has highlighted this too much. For Delhites- particularly Punjabis, without onions, there is no life. Personally, I don't see why onions are so significant. If you do not eat or curtail eating onions, the hoarders. game will be defeated.
In today's, local Agra newspaper, there is happy news of the onion prices coming down.

Its our attachment with things that make us upset when there is a scarcity. When I found the prices of onions are shooting up, i reduced the use of onions. If necessary i stop it entirely. I do not owe my life to onions.

Non veg food generally needs onion. Punjabis take non veg as well as spicy veg food that need onions. The classical Brahmins in U.P. do not use onions at all. Rather they dislike this. Personally, I don't to eat raw onions though many Punjabis do this. Onion is no doubt an important ingredient in food but when there is scarcity or unusual high price, we can make some adjustments. In fact, many have done this.

Apart from consumer need, onion is also an election issue.

Now the question is why this rise of price of onions slowly and steadily marching towards century mark, in the election year, Personally, I am vegetarian by birth, and also I do not take onions in my foods as it is prohibited in my community (Inner Brahmin servitor of Lord Jagannath) but still I find lots of stresses in the budget of common man and everywhere people are talking about this.

Essential Commodities act has not been made applicable to onions. It is reported that this is being hoarded in some places particularly Maharashtra. It is definitely gross failure of government. Possibly, govts. of Delhi, Rajasthan, M.P. may not be responsible. But there is only emotion and not logic in electioneering. any stick is good to beat the opponents. Once BJP government had been defeated in Delhi on this issue only. Now this is turn of congress.

Yes opposition wants a stick irrespective of its make or size. Yes, onions once became the nemesis of BJP. Now it's the turn of Congress. History repeats .
I think I am the luckiest than all of you, onion is $6/10kg bag that is almost 32-33/ in IC. If you convert it with real value of this, it will be less than Rs 3 per kg back home.

According to news snippets Nasik onion mandi is receiving huge money by creating artificial shortages and then after price hike, sending large number of onions into market, all these mandi are controlled by an influential politician.
