Space
Milky Way is the name of our galaxy that includes he sun, the earth and the rest of our solar system. It is also called the Akashganga.
The boundless expanse (a wide area) in which all objects exists and moves. There are three dimensions of space, length, width, and height.
Years on other planets are longer or shorter, depending on how long they each take to orbit the sun. The planet with the shortest is mercury, which whizzes around the sun in just 88 days. The planet with the longest year is Neptune, which takes 164 years to orbit the sun. The year on Pluto, which is no longer a planet (it is now a dwarf planet) is 249 years long.
Space shuttle
A reusable spacecraft is for repeated use between earth and space station. Space shuttle, the first reusable spacecraft, has made manned space light out into Earth’s orbit and back almost a matter of routine. The space shuttle is made up of a 37.2 m long orbiter, two big solid Rocket Boosters (SRBS), three main engines and a tank. The first four orbiters were named –Colombia, challenger, Discovery and Atlantis.
A rocket is a device used to propel a vehicle like a space craft. It is very helpful in space exploration. However, it can also be used to move ships, aircraft and cars. It is shaped like a tube and most of its volume contains fuel. When the fuel is burned, hot gasses shoot out of the tail, pushing the rocket upwards. The first rocket was made in China more than 800 years ago.
Space station
It is a special kind of artificial satellite used as a base for operations in space like astronomical observation, surveys of earth, biological studies etc.
Space suit
When people travel into space, they need to be protected from the deadly heat and cold outside and also be provided air to breathe. Spacesuit is a sealed pressurized suit worn by an astronaut at the time of leaving a spacecraft and move about in outer space. It completely covers an astronaut’s body from head to toe. It is survival system which protects the astronaut from dangerous radiation, changes in pressure and temperature extremes. There are two types of spacesuit. One is worn during the take –off and re-entry. The other for space walks.
Space –walks
When astronauts drift outside the orbiting spacecraft alongside it, we say they are taking a walk.
The first space walkers were tied to their spacecraft by life-support cables. Now –a- days, most space walkers use a Manned Maneuvering Unit (MMU) a huge, rocket-powered backpack that lets then move about freely.
