All animals in the forest were hungry. The reason was there was no rain. Every thing was dry. They sat round the magic tree. If you called it by it names, it would give fruit. But none of them knew its name.
Then a wise old zebra stood up. Up. `The mountain God knows the name of the tree. He will tell us.
The hare agreed to go to the mountain god. He ran very fast through the forest. At last he came to the mountain.
The hare asked the mountain God for the name of the magic tree.
``The name of the tree is Kalpavruksham’.
The hare thanked him and off he went. He ran and ran with happy. He did not look this way or that. He ran straight down the path.
Now in the middle of the path there was an anthill. The hare was running so fast he did not see the anthill. He hit his head against the anthill. Crash!
But he got up again. He ran on till he reached the hungry animals under the tree.
`What’s the name of the tree? What is the name of tree? They cried.
` I am sorry’ said the hare. I have forgotten.’
Then the lion said, `I will go.’ He got up and started walking towards the mountain.
At last he reached the mountain and asked the mountain God for the name of magic tree.
`The good tree name is Kalpavruksham’.
And the lion ran off from there. He ran and ran he did not look this or that way. He ran straight down the path.
Now in the middle of the path there was an anthill. The lion was running so fast he did not see the anthill. He hit his head against the anthill. Crash!
He got up. In the evening, he reached his friends under the tree.
``what is the name of the tree? What is the name of tree?’’ they cried.
` I am sorry,’ said the lion. I have forgotten.’
Then an old tortoise got up and offered to go.
`You!’ cried the animals. `You cannot walk quickly.’
`I will bring the name,’ said the tortoise. `Don’t worry.’ And off he went into the forest.
After a week he came to the mountain.
`what do you want, O Tortoise?’ said the mountain God.
` I want the name of the magic tree,’ said the tortoise.
`The name of the tree is Kalpavruksham. Now remember that. And don’t worry me again.’
The tortoise walked slowly down the path. He looked up and he looked down. He looked to the right and he looked to the left. He came to the anthill. He stopped and looked at it. Then the turned and went round it.
After a week he came to the tree. His friends were waiting.
`What is the name of the tree? What is the name of the tree?’ they cried.
` Kalpavruksham,’ said the tortoise.
` Kalpavruksham, it is Kalpavruksham! They shouted. Suddenly the magic tree was full of fruit. The animals thanked the tortoise and began to eat.
