Prasad and Vimala were celebrating their on Suri’s birth day. The house was packed with relatives, friends and neighbors. Madhu looked after arrangements for the feast. Special sweets and other delicacies were made for the occasion.
One of Vimala’s close friends could not come as her child was ill. Vimala told Madhu that some sweets should be sent to her friend before the feast began. Madhu promised to do so.
Madhu packed the sweets in a beautiful silver box. He could not think of any other person than his son, Suresh, to deliver the gift. He entered Suresh with the task.
``Father, that lady’s house is on the other side of the village,’’ said Suresh. ``It will take a long time for me to go and come back. I may not be back in time for the feast’’.
``No, Suresh, you can come back in time,’’ said his father.’’ take the short cut route, through the fields and run’’
Suresh had to go. He took the box and ran thorough the fields and delivered it to Vimala’s friend. When he started to return, the lady called him back and said, `` wait a minute and take back the sliver box.’’ after emptying the box, she handed it over to Suresh. He started walking back home through the green fields.
Soon he noticed that someone was following him. He became suspicious. He thought that the stranger was a robber. He was strong. His body was big, but his head was small. Suresh was frightened. He started running. He noticed that the man behind him also started running. Suresh was very frightened and ran faster. The stranger also ran faster. He was getting near and near to Suresh. It was clear that the stranger was a robber who wanted the sliver box.
Suresh was running past a well when suddenly an idea occurred to him. He stopped running and sat on the wall of the well. He placed the silver box by his side. Leaning over he peered down into the well. As the robber reached the well, Suresh burst out crying. The man was taken aback. The boy continued to cry loudly. The robber was afraid that the boy’s crying would attract people. He asked Suresh what the matter was.
Suresh sobbed and said, `` I was tired after running with this heavy sliver box. I wanted to drink a little water and looked into the well to see how I could d that. Then suddenly bad luck struck,’’ and he started to cry again.
What happened? Tell me. I will try to help you,’’ said the robber.
``As I was looking down into the well,’’ said Suresh,’’ my gold chain with the pendent fell into the water. Father and mother will be angry if I lose it. Only last week they pent a lot of money and had it made for especially for me. The pendent was not only beautiful, but also it is much cost. With sparking diamonds and rubies and the chain was of pure gold. I have lost it now, how I can go my home?’’
Suresh looked so dad that robber believed him. He thought the chain with the pendent was much more voluble than this slier box.
``Please don’t cry’’, said the robber’’. I will recover your chain and pendent.’’
The robber climbed down into the well and dived into the water in search of gold chain. Suresh picked up the silver box and ran home as fast as he could. He told the story to others and he became the hero who had outwitted a robber.
