Once there lived a lazy farmer. He hated any kind of work. He always wanted to sleep. He would often say: ``I wish I had a genie as my servant. He could do all my work and ask for no wages’’.
One day a genie heard the farmer talk like this. He appeared before the farmer and said, `` I will do all your work and ask for no wages. But there is one condition. You will have to give me work always. When you cannot give me any work, I will kill you and eat your flesh!
The farmer laughed to himself. He thought - ``How foolish this genie is! I will give him lots and lots of work to do. He will get no time to sleep and rest.
Then he said to the demon, ``All right! You will always get work to do. Now go and dig a big well in my field.’’
The genie went away to the farmer’s field.
The farmer was very happy. He said to himself, ``the genie will take ten days at least to dig the well. So I can sleep in peace for ten days.’’
But as soon as the farmer closed hi eyes to sleep, the genie came back. He said, ``Master,
I have dug the well. Give me another task.’’ The farmer was surprised as well as angry. He said, ``Go away and build a big palace for me. I want to invite all the villagers for big feast. Also prepare the feast for them. Till then do not disturb my sleep’’.
The genie came back after half an hour. He woke the farmer and said, ``Master, the feast is ready. What is my next task?’’
The farmer was badly frightened. He knew the genie would kill him if he gave him no work. He ran to the village schoolmaster and told him about his problem. The schoolmaster thought for a moment, and then said, `` I have a dog it and ask the genie to make its tail straight.’’
The genie was very happy to hear this. He thought: ``what an easy task I will finish it in no time. The farmer has no more tasks for me. After this last task I will kill l him and eat his flesh. I have not enjoyed human flesh for a long time.’’
The genie pulled the dog’s tail straight. But when he let it go, it curled again. He tried many hundred times, but every time the tail curled again. The genie sweated from head to foot. At last he left the dog and ran away. He never showed himself again.
