According to the historical view,the earliest known brimmed hat is the Greek petasos,and it was usually worn by travelers and they are tied under the chin. Apart form this hat other types of hat includes the cone-shaped, forward-slanting cap and these are originated in Phrygia and mainly these are presented to Roman slaves upon manumission.Normally this type of cap was adopted as the “liberty cap” of the French revolutionists and apart from that it was also served as a symbol of liberty in the United States in the 17th century.
Woolen hoods, turban like chaperons and Student's cap are mainly used by men during the medieval period in Europe.During the Renaissance period, the hat for men included the soft, flat caps called Tudor bonnets and after that the full-crowned brimmed hats decorated which contains feathers or brooches were used by both men and women.
Hats of the 17th century also includes the
1)Plain narrow-crowned
2)Stiff-brimmed hats which was worn by Puritans and
3)The soft, low-crowned, broad-brimmed hats of the Quakers.
Apart from this Linen and lace caps are indoor caps which was worn mainly by middle-class women and servants; Usually the conservative peasant women in different parts of Europe usually wear variations of these caps.
Cavaliers wore plumed hats at the time of English Revolution between 1640 and 1660,and from this type of hat a three-cornered hat, or tricorne, typical of the 18th century was developed from these and it is done by turning up the brim at both sides and in front.
It was during the 19th century, the hat shapes and styles proliferated. Inspite of all these hat,the black bicorne hat,with a wide brim folded up on both the sides, was affected by Napoleon I and other fashionable men during the early 1800s. Later in th e19th century,stiff beaver or lacquered silk hats with stovepipe crowns was used by the men and it is called as Gentleman's hat.
The transformation of the hats from the 19th to 20 th century retained the basic forms of the 19th century,but with the high silk hat reserved for only the most formal occasions or any big parties. Even the Women's hat styles continued to change constantly,but this was happening till the World War 2 and generally this World War 2 is the main cause or the decline for the variety of hats used by both Men and Women
