The fiction-writer Chetan Bhagat has taken the literary world by the storm with his works. His three novels -Five Point Someone, One Night @ the Call Centre and The 3 Mistakes of My Life have grossed up nearly 2.5 million copies. He is one of a distinguished list of successful India writers in English who have earned fame throughout the world. The list has a a galaxy of literary giants like Mulk Raj Anand, Nirad C. Chowdury, Vikram Seth, Nayantara Saigal, Amitav Ghosh, Anita Desai, Jumpa Lahiri and others.
His single-most achievement has been his extraordinary success in connecting to the new generation with his themes. As all his books are modestly price which too is a new trend, it has been possible for him to reach a wider readership. Earlier if a particular book was sold some 5000 to 10,000 copies it used to be dubbed as a “best seller”. With so many copies of his books being sold, the publishers too are setting a new benchmark for this purpose.
Bhagat spent most of his early years in Delhi and did not have a very happy memories with his parents having regular fights. His father was an Army officer and naturally very strict in enforcing discipline at home. All these must have influenced his formative years and impressionable mind. He did his graduation at IIT and IIM and joined a financial service company in Honkong which unfortunately pulled down its shutters within six months but he move on to another big financial service company. It is interesting to note that he thoroughly disliked his and just to take revenge on his boss whom he disliked utterly, he took to writing in the office. And when he finally produced one and knocked on the doors of publishers to do him a favour by publishing, he met rejection by not less than nine times before Rupa agreed to publish it.
Now he has the world swooning at his feet. The film 3 Idiots is based on his work “ Five Point” and more than a few thousands attend his talks. He has fans and admirers all over the world. In his supreme confidence he hopes his new book 2 States which is just out, would be the biggest hit!
