It is called Kollu in tamil. Using this in our regular diet will greatly reduce the amount of excess fat stored in our body.
1. Horse gram Idly
Ingredients:
- Par Boiled Rice - 4 cups
- Horse gram - 1 cup
- Urad dhal ( Full ) - 1/4 cup
- Fenugreek seeds - 2 tsp
- Salt - As per taste
Method:
1. Wash the rice 3 to 4 times and soak it for 4 hours.
2. Wash horse gram, urad dhal and fenugreek seeds and put all in a vessel and soak for 4 hours.
3. First grind urad dhal mixture nicely in a grinder. Add water little by little. After dhal is grinded well a slight foam appears on the corners.Then remove
dhal flour from the grinder and keep it in a broad vessel.
4. Then grind the rice. Don't grind it very soft or very coarse. It should be like rawa.
5. Add salt and mix both the flours well using your hands and keep it aside.
6. Make idlis the next day using idli plates .
7. Serve the idlis with chutney or idly chilli powder.
2. Horse gram Thuvayal
Ingredients:
- Horse gram - 3 tsp
- Urad dhal - 1 tsp
- Red chillies - 4 to 5
- Tamarind - little
- Grated coconut - 1/2 cup
- Curry leaves
- Coriander leaves
- Mustard seeds - 1 tsp
- Salt - As per taste
Method:
1. Heat oil in a pan and fry urad dhal.
2. When it becomes slightly brown , add red chillies , horse gram and cocunut and fry for some time and allow it cool.
3. Grind together all the above fried ingredients with tamarind, salt, coriander leaves and curry leaves to a paste.
4. Heat little oil in pan and fry mustard seeds till it sputters out
5. Put the mustard seeds in the grinded paste.
6. Mix this with rice and eat. It will be very tasty.
3. Horse gram rasam
Ingredients:
- Horse gram - 1 tsp
- Tamarind - size of lemon
- Tomato - 1
- Grated coconut - 1 1/2 tsp
- Jaggery powder - 1 tsp
- Rasam powder - 1 tsp
- Turmeric powder - 1/4 tsp
- Mustard seeds - 1 tsp
- Asafoetida powder - little
- Oil - 1 tsp
- Curry leaves
- Coriander leaves
- Salt - As per taste
Method:
1. Extract juice from tamarind for 1/4 cup.
2. Cut tomato to small pieces.
3. Fry horse gram in an empty pan and cook it in pressure cooker along with rice.
4. Heat oil in a pan and add mustard seeds.
5. When mustard seeds sputters out, add tamarind juice, rasam powder, turmeric powder, tomato, jaggery powder, curry leaves and salt and stir it well.
6. When it boils add 1/4 cup of water.
7. After rasam is well boiled and tomato is cooked, add already cooked horse gram and coconut and mix it well.
8. Remove rasam from the flame after the foam comes in the corners.
9. Garnish with coriander leaves.
