Naked (1993):

No comments on “Naked (1993):”
From the Criterion collection comes a highly recommended British film of the 90s. This is my first Mike Leigh's film and too stark and artsy ones to start with. But it was worth every 130 minutes of it.There's no real plot actually. Mostly everything was improvised. An intelligent, knowledgeable and an eloquent -- yet suffering from occasional bouts of mental depression and derangement -- man named Johnny rapes a woman in Manchester and to avoid a beating from her parents flees to London in a stolen car. There he meets his girlfriend Sophie and her flatmate Louise. While Sophie is not as beautiful or curvaceous as her flatmate is, she is a full-time employed person, and Louise remains at home, or is quite possibly a prostitute, judging by the type of clothes she wears. Johnny, as a man of profound knowledge and wit successfully seduces Louise and they consummate eventually, during which time we see a masochist side of Johnny -- pulling her hair, twisting her arm, etc -- perhaps his untreated derangement. Meanwhile, in some other part of London an attractive yet sexually frustrated yuppie, Jeremy, is seen chasing any female he gets an opportunity to talk with and making immediate sexual advances at them. He, too, turns out to be kinky.Johnny, mentally disturbed as he is, leaves the cozy confine of her girlfriend's apartment in cold December evening in pursuit of yet another sexual escapade(s). On his way out he meets a lot of atypical characters: a manner-less, eccentric Scot searching frantically for his girlfriend; a middle-aged man working for a security agency who is as philosophical and as lonely as Johnny is; an Irish woman who dances in her flat's bedroom without pulling the curtains on in her window, quite possibly to attract the attention of "peeping toms"; an attractive girl working in a diner, who had an uglier past of her own. Since the film, with duration of just over two hours, is rather slow, what the director and the co-scriptwriter, David Thewlis, who also portrayed Johnny in the film, should be given the credit for is the subtle humour and the witty, improvised dialogues and mannerisms that the main characters incorporated throughout much of the stark atmosphere in the movie. It could also be considered as a social commentary over the British people and their relationship conundrums. Mike Leigh is generally regarded for his films laced with social realism; Naked is perhaps one of his best in that regard, though I cannot be too sure of that. 8/10

everybody's fine

robert de niro is BACK....neither in the usual all swearing psychotic(the roles he has been doing all his life),nor as the humourous funnyman(the roles he has been doing for the last 10 yrs or so)....but in a role which really fits in to his age !!

everybody's fine is a emotional journey and is not at all a feel good movie as indicated by the trailers!it is rather thoroughly depressing....the movie is about a father's relationship with his children and how he refuses to see them grow up,how his children hide facts from him and how he gets hurt.its about the underlying respect children have for their dads, but is unable to express them !!

the movie starts pretty slowly but becomes pretty interesting and emotional in the 2nd half....robert de niro's performance is praiseworthy...the supporting cast also did a good job specially drew barrymore and sam rockwell...

this movie should be more appealing to the above 30 bracket, but still in general its really good!!

The return of Robert De Niro
Everybody's Fine-

Robert De Niro it seems has finally realised that he is in his mid-60s and cannot possibly continue to keep doing the macho angry man roles...

WHAT A SUPERB PERFORMANCE....

The movie is pretty depressing and pretty beautiful...it explores the relationships of a father with his children...I liked the movie quite a lot...and De Niro gives a superb performance...after a long time...He hasn't done this kind of roles before...a quiet matured impassioned performance from Mr De Niro...definitely recommended...

My Left Foot- Thank God For DDl
We as human mortals should really thank god for producing an actor like DDL.i mean what he does with this roles can NEVER be done by any1 else.If anybody wants to see the best possible portrayal of a role give it to DDL.The amount of perfection he brings about a role is undeniable.
As far is the movie is concerned,i was left speechless by the performances.
the movie was great too.. after everything is performance driven in the movie.Had the performances not been good the movie wld have failed to create an impact

jane Austen Book Club
A really delightful movie that explores the personal relationships of members of a book club as they read through various stories of Jane Austen. It is a good movie and shld be watched even if u have'nt read any of Austen's books.

Harishchandrachi factory

I expected a bit more from this movie. I mean yes it was a autobiographical movie. No nothing can be altered from the real events, but there must be a msg behind it which is clear. It had a msg of passion, as a movie lover i simply loved the things happening on screen. Music used was brilliant. Acting was good it not best. But the ending didn't have a punch to it. i will give it 7.89 on 10.....cant give a clear 8 because of the acting....

Elegy

October Sky (1999)

It is a novel written by a NASA engineer and trainer.
The film on the other hand made an awesome scar in my heart. It is a film one must never miss.
It is about a 17 year old teen who roams aimless in a remote village called CoalWood.
That was the time when Russia launched Sputnik and made a history in space explorations.
One evening everyone will come out to watch sputnik orbiting the sky, it will look like a tiny star moving, it was the time when the kid, goes dumb and realizes that he too wants to be there at the heights.
His dad and school principal want him to do their town job, which is coal mining, but his teacher will strongly support him to pursuade his dreams..
After many tragedies and sorrows, Homer gets to make rockets.
Homer, the kid is the future NASA engineer.

A worth watching movie , i started to see this film by half past 12 in the night and i didn't sleep till the film got over!!!
