Articles (A, AN, The)
A and An are indefinite articles means you do not know the quantity of things you can use them with singular thing.
A is used before the word which begins with consonant sound or alphabet. For e.g. A book, A pen etc. or with the word like a European, a university it begins with vowel but gives the sound of consonant.
An is used before the word which begins with vowel sound for e.g. An honest, An hour it begins with consonant but gives the sound of vowel O or alphabet (a,e,i,o,u) for e.g. An umbrella, an egg
We cannot use A and An with uncountable nouns for e.g. we cannot say like a Water, a sand because we cannot Count water and sand.
The is definite articles. It is used in following ways:
The is used to particularize a person or a thing for e.g. I have lost the watch which my uncle gave me. In this sentence we are talking about the watch which his uncle gave to him.
The is used before the superlative degrees for e.g. The best, The tallest etc.
The is used before the words which tells about the whole species for e.g. the cow give milk. Here we can say that al cow give milk.
The is used before the name of newspapers, magazines, rivers, mountains, name of month, week, degrees( for e.g. M.A.) and the things which are unique (for e.g. sun, moon)
It is also used before the morning, evening, directions, musical instruments, public places (The Bank, The Cinema), etc.
The is used to show the position of any object like in the middle, on the top
The is used to show the status of any person like the rich man, the old woman.
We cannot use The with the following:
The is cannot be used with proper nouns like Delhi is the capital of India, here we cannot use the with Delhi.
We cannot use the with the words like Lunch, Dinner, Breakfast, next week, last month, last summer, last Monday.
With the material like gold, silver.
With the name of games like cricket, football etc.
