Immunization is the important and the easiest means for the prevention of infectious diseases. It is, therefore, that as soon as information is received by the health authorities about the occurrence of any case of disease, vaccination campaign are undertaken to raise resistance of the people against that disease. Such timely steps eliminates the disease from assuming the shape of an epidemic.
The following steps may be taken for the needful:-
- Vaccine:-Parents and children should get themselves immunized against infectious disease like smallpox, polio and tuberculosis etc. This can be done through timely vaccination which involves the injecting of vaccine into the human body. Vaccine cause human body to build its own antibiotics against the disease germs.
- Toxoids :-The other immunizing method beside the vaccines, are toxoids and serums. A toxoid contains a poison, released by the disease germ, which stimulates antibody formation against the disease. An example is Diptheria toxoid
- Serum:-A serum consists of antibodies which are obtained from our own body or from some other animal , usually the horse. Serum is injected in emergency to help a person until he can form his own antibodies. Its effect is usually for a short duration. It can neutralize the toxins produced by germs but it does not stimulate antibody formation. The anti-toxin, prepared against diphtheria, is an example.
Thus we find that immunizing methods plays crucial role in preventing and controlling infectious diseases. Prevention is always better than cure. So, it is much wiser for us to protect ourselves against diseases than to take the risk of getting them and then running to the doctor.
