Safety First
Most of the accidents are caused by carelessness. Accidents can take place anywhere any time and without any warning. But many accidents can easily be prevented by following simple rules of safety at home, in schools, on roads and public places.
Safety At Home
Accidents at home are mostly caused by fall, fire, electric shocks and poisoning.
Falls
Falls are the most common kind of accident at home. To avoid them following measures should be taken.
Floors and stairs should be in good condition.
Toys, shoe and other objects should be picked up and put away- not left on floors on staircases for the people to trip on especially at night.
Spilled water, greases, oil and other liquids should be cleaned up as quickly as possible.
When you reach for something high up, use a ladder or chair. The chair or ladder should be securely placed.
Stairs and doorways should be well lighted.
Fire
Accidents by fire mostly take place in the kitchen and can cause serious injuries and sometimes death. To avoid such accidents we should take the following measures:
When a gas leak is suspected no matches should be struck and no electric switch should be turned on. Windows should be opened immediately to let the gas out and allow fresh air to come in.
Never fail to turn off the gas stoves when not in use. To prevent leaks, stove installation should be inspected periodically.
Do not wear nylon clothes while cooking in the kitchen.
Electric Shocks
Many fires are the result of faulty or inadequate electrical wiring. You must have seen toasters, irons, kettles, lamps, stoves and other electric gadgets used in your house. If they are not handled carefully or they are defective, they may prove to be dangerous. They can give severe electric shock or cause fire in the house.
To avoid such accidents we should take the following measures:
All electrical wiring should be installed and maintained by a qualified, licensed electrician.
Never touch any electrical appliances if your hands are wet.
Never unplug an appliance by pulling on the cord or eventually you can break the connection with the plug.
Do not go near electrical appliances while they are working. Switch should be turned off before touching them.
