No bright colours! No scary decorations or embroidery! A combination of just three colours – black, white and gray. What else is just clean! This interior style is known as Indian Contemporary Style. Black, white and grey – these three colours to draw interiors in western style in reiterated to add one bright colour as highlighter to make it Indian style designing. It’s just like placing a bright cherry on the top of a Vanilla ice cream.
If you have an idea of basic designing, you can also prepare your interior in contemporary style. Basic idea is to make everything simple, avoiding extra fittings and artificial ingredients. Now, sculptured pillars, paned walls and embroidery designs are out of fashion. Such finishing touches are not used in contemporary designs. Instead everything is just parallel and perpendicular lines without curves.
If a table is placed in a room, shape of that table is the real beauty. It should never be its embroidery works or finishing touches. Hoping you got a small idea on this modern style of interior designing. Through this article, I am giving you some basic ideas to design your dream home in this style.
Sunlight…..more than needed
Trade mark of contemporary style homes is free passage of light and spacious rooms. Dark and narrow rooms are not a part of contemporary designs. To get sufficient sunlight inside rooms, big ‘openings’ are used everywhere. It may be in the form of big doors or windows. If there is no opening, use glass in those areas. Either in living room or bed room, space for big windows only.
It’s possible to use glass skylights attaching walls and roofs together. Glass walls – another method to bring light inside. So, primary aim is to give maximum sunlight and air circulation to rooms. If so, a lot of power consumed through lights and fans at day time can be saved. Thus it becomes an echo friendly home for sure.
Natural style – no artificial elements added
Every ingredient used for construction and decoration purposes – use them without any modification. In normal homes a wall is plastered first and then wooden paneling is done for decoration. Also, tiles are fitted on the concrete roofs. In contemporary design, both these methods are not followed during designing phase. Wall is used as wall and wood as wood without adding any spices giving a natural touch up.
No noise of decorations
It may be furniture or other interior designing items – use everything minimal. Even after placing furniture, there should be a lot of free space inside rooms to give free circulation of light and air. Such unused spaces are the highlights and centre of attraction while a guest enters the home.
The rule used in designing is ‘minimalism’. A sofa plus a flower vase is sufficient for a living room. When you enter a room, your vision should not be distorted by different things placed inside. Instead, a particular object should get your full attention. There lies the success of contemporary designing. So, the focal point of a guest should be only on most important things, not everywhere.
Basic colours for design
Minimum colours are used for contemporary style. Black, white and grey are the most common colours.
For a change
Contemporary style designing can be seen in any part of the world. When this global style is changed a little bit by adding our own flavours, it becomes Indian. But basic principles should never be altered.
The main change has occurred in the colour chosen. Basic colours are white and grey. A wall or a part of a wall can be painted by using a little darker colour. This process is known as highlighter. So, white, grey along with highlighter is the latest Indian trend.
You can use the same experiments with used furnishing clothes as well. Instead of rexin, leather and plain upholstery works use Indian style cotton. Never choose print designs. But you can use designed clothes with self designed texture while cloth furnishing. Furnishing should adopt only simple embroidery.
Tiles and bricks can be retained the same
Even the most commonly available bricks and tiles can be used for contemporary design. Use some natural flooring tiles for floors. But make it simple without adding designs, buttons or borders. Brick walls can be used without plastering.
Some simple tips to follow
- Most important in contemporary style are perpendicular lines. Never use curved designs anywhere, doors, windows and ceilings. All should follow straight lines.
- In the case of furniture also, same principle is to be followed. For upholstery work, use only black, white or neutral colours. But one highlight colour can be used.
- Use colourful small cushions in satin furniture. But keep note, only straight designing.
- Never use colourful prints for furnishing. Yet, in a living room you can use so, for two single seats. Or in plain black sofa, use zebra print cushion.
- Never do upholstery that fully covers the furniture. Legs of sofa and chairs should be visible outside. Never gives frill designs or skirts to beds or tables.
- Never construct shelves in bed rooms that project outside. Instead arrange another separate dressing area. It should be regularly and neatly arranged.
- For flooring, use wood, vinyl or tiles with simple layouts. No borders or embroidery. Carpets also, not needed. Yet, if you need one, use plain or geometric printed area rug.
- Use glass in design process where ever necessary. If you construct one wall fully with glass, it’s just extra ordinary. Through this glass you can view garden or scenery outside.
- Instead of hanging pictures in all walls, just dedicate one wall for pictures or paintings.
A few more designing ideas
- Red is best highlighting colour for your living room and bed room.
- Brown and white combination is simply the best for kitchen.
- Make simple staircase with glass borders. So simple! You can place a simple glass tank on one side.
- Everything designed in perpendicular, in a dining hall. Even chairs, tables, windows, doors and ventilators have a uniform shape. Glass wall on one side of dining hall provides garden view.
Most important thing is that never buy too much items for your home. Just a few items for your requirement, as more items need for space and thus reduce the beauty of contemporary style designing. Let sunlight and air flow through your rooms freely. Everything is in contemporary style but with a royal touch!
