Writers returning their awards - what do they hope to achieve?

We see quite a few writers returning their awards just as a protest against the recent killings of rationalists in Maharashtra and Karnataka...6 Kannada writers , Nayan tara Sehgal from the Nehru family, kerala writer Sarah Joseph and a few others ..

These rational writers are behaving in a very irrational and immature manner by doing this. What exactly do they hope to achieve? the awards were given to them by the previous governments and even a lay person like me would never insult anyone who gives me a gift or put down someone who has recognised my contribution. They are insulting the nation by doing this , probably thinking that they would show the present government in a poor light, which will not work.

They no doubt feel threatened by the killings .Narendra Dabholkar was killed in 2013 when UPA was in power and the other two happened during this year..So are the rationalists blaming only the present government?  As far as the general public is concerned, although some of the rationalists' methods and speeches may seem as crude as the extremists but I doubt if anyone would want to cause physical harm to them. Instead of trying to alienate and conduct themselves in a superior manner, if they try to assimilate with the people and gain their understanding,  things would get sorted out and even the hard core elements would probably soften their attitude towards them

It would be interesting to make a study and conclude which one was a drama and which one was not....whether the writers returning their awards or Modi issuing a statement ! The two issues are inter connected , if the writers did not do what they did , there was no need for Modi to make a statement ..

Modi makes a statement, today Jaitley pleads, the President appeals for sanity, RSS disowns article in its mouthpiece, all these are good signs. Some one had to protest to make all this happen. Even protests are to be politicised / communalised.

This is wrong, most of these writers have gained from these awards and now they are returning is it because they are opposed to current ideology of central government, only time will tell.

Recently some writers have been killed for their rationalist and unorthodox thoughts. Latest killing is of a Dalit writer for allegedly writing Anti Hindu articles- actially he wrote against caste system that is dubbed as anti Hindu. Sahitya Academy has also condemnedthe murder of writers and requested then not to return the awards. The writers returned te rewards for expressing resentment on Dadri killing that signifies growing intolerance.  The Sahitya Academy resolution is considered as victory for free speech.

In a country where reading habits are one of the  lowest in the world, writers are not widely regarded unless htey are highly publicised or have foreign acceptance. The politicians have over the years become the opinion makers and that is why they were so rattled by writers returning awards. Politicians do not want to cede space to writers.

The most confusing aspect of their protest is the fact that they change their stand depending on the changing views of the media nd the public, which shows they are not sure why they are protesting in the first place

Returning awards by the writers may not bring impact on the actions taken by government. However it is considered as the way of expressing their views to the government in the democratic way.
