Earlier it was said that films will destroy the children. So children were not allowed to sees movies. A good number would see a movie o as they grew older by hook or crook. Children who stay in hostels are very responsible without parental supervision. Now the internet has replaced films. There will always be a few who unfortunately get off track in spite of all controls and checks. Today's children are smarter and also responsible. parents should trust their chilodren rather than all the time act as back seat drivers.

In families where children are treated like friends, I haven't seen such problems.

More children are spoilt by inflexible parents than free access to internet

Rigididity in parenting will never work. Rigid parenting is the outcome of ignorance and inability to face the fast changing life.

Yes even I agree, internet usage should be timed and monitored.
As far as FB and other similar sites are concerned, here I guess the site owners should make it a point to ask for a valid Driving License No and Voter ID card no to ascertain the age of the users. This will go a long way in not only limiting FB usage by kids but will help in minimizing crime rate too.

With Windows 8 parental cotnrol all sessions are sent to administrator email account and it is done without notice of child the only caveat is not to let child to use administrator account, instead let use standard account, which is same as admin account sans certain admin privileges. In many schools now computer is being intoduced right from class 1 and children learn how to use it also know how to use the internet. In such a scenarion it depends on the parents as to how best they can mould the child and make him/her use it for specific purposes only, until when they are able to make decisions which is early now while compared to before. A child at 11 or 12 knows how to use the web is already a member of social sites and may even be experimenting with porn sites and one cannot do anything much about it and in my opinion there is no harm as long as it is limited to socialising but again how can one keep tabs ? this is where parental guidance helps !
Parental guidance and obtaining more knowledge about various control measures works a lot. In many cases parents themselves do not know either how to use internet or how to implement various firewalls or family filters etc. So it really needs efforts on parents' part to know more technology to hellp them keep tabs on their child's net usage. There are even certain softwares which records all the sites that a child visits, because at this point the child is too clever to delete their recent browsing history afterwards but it gets recorded in those particular softwares. This may seem like spying or invading their personal space, but at least until age 18, this IS needed!

The suggestions are worthy but impractical to implement. You will be surprised at how many underage children watch adult movies in theaters with cooperation of theater staff. Controls never work - people find ways to beat them.

I agree. Such restrictive measures will help. Besides this parents also should know the trends of the net, though not fully, to some extent,. With these two factors taken care, Internet viewing by children can be minimized .

The children will then watch internet at other places w/o parental knowledge. At home they will not at all watch and parents will feel mighty happy. Why all the time parents want to control.

These are not at all feasible solutions since personal data such as voter ID or driving license numbers can be easily hacked and be misused. Also, the ownership of most of these sites are either US or some other country, not Indian so these measures really do not work. Instead parents need to strictly lay down rules as to which sites can be visited by the children and also the reasons why they cannot visit them. Communicating in a manner which is both agreeable as well as firm will let children understand why they are being told to not look at such sites. Also, in due course of time, with enough trust and confidence, even children are able to discern for themselves the advantages or disadvantages of any such sites!
