I have been hearing a lot of gush-gush comments about Pranab Mukherjee from some of my friends and when I challenged some of them to cite a single concrete achievement of this gentleman for justification of their such high-flown praise - all were groping for words! Ha!

There may be no achievements to Pranab's records. So, ignore him. But give some other one. Kalam is not a candidate. So, the title of the thread needs be changed:
Sangma or Pranab Mukherjee.

It's a hypothetical exercise and let his name stay as record in our forum for posterity that two political parties wished to have him as a candidate!

As to Pranab's achievements I just want his admirers to cite a few so that I can admire him!!

As told by Chinmoy, this is a hypothetical exercise and as such even unreal or hypothetical candidate like Kalam can also be considered. Kalam is no doubt an eminent scientist having held highest post in DRDO (Defence Research organization). But he is unwilling. He will agree to contest election only if his victory is assured. In electoral politics, nobody can put such condition. Pranab Mukherjee is sure to win but he also does not take voters for granted and will not put such condition. If anyone fears defeat in any election and demands guarantee for winning, he certainly does not suit any electoral post including that of President. As such, Kalam is unsuitable and needs to be discarded. In fact, he himself has discarded himself. Still Trinmool congress and some others are day dreaming about Kalam.

Another prospective candidate Sangma is not favored by even his own party. His only merit is that he is Tribal. He is definitely not a deserving candidate any way.

On the other hand, Pranab Mukherjee is most experienced in active politics of coalition era. He held several important portfolios in union cabinet. He is crisis manager. He is known as Sankat Mochak (problem solver). There can be no one more suitable than him. That is why UPA (except TMC) and many others have favored him.

Moreover, President has only ceremonial role except for appointment of council of ministers and he has to act on advice of council of ministers. Pranab Mukherjee has a very pleasing personality, his way of expression is best, his speech is easily understood. He is the best to grace occasions of Republic day and other ceremonial functions.

We wish the best to Pranab Mukherjee and hope that he will uphold the constitution of India and maintain cordial relation with all political parties consistent with constitution.

NDA has not yet been able to finalize strategy in forthcoming elections.

That's exactly my feeling,if Pranab Mukherji is such an outstanding administrator,an outstanding Finance Minister - why he has been considered for such ceremonial position when the country is in the midst of a grave economic crisis! Another very strange aspect of his candidature has been the kind of support that is coming for him from all questionable quarters! Lalu Prasad,Mulayam,even discredited Left - who once even dubbed me as the architect of the ecnomic policies which has produced the present economic crisis. What kind of dichotomy is this in our thing? We love and respect Dr.Kalam and vote for Pranab Mukherjee!

Now Pranab Mukherji will be the next and we are proud of him as Bangali.

No. He is not in race because he is not guaranteed victory. Presently, there is no insurance policy covering risk of defeat in Presidential or any other election. This is not new for Kalam. even during last elections, he was offered support by NDA but he even then wanted guarantee of success.

It is UPA decision to field him as a candidate for President. He has been spared for the post even though he was badly needed in active politics. As regards questionable quarters like Lalu, they are members of UPA and there is no reason why they should not support UPA candidate. As regards left, they cannot field their own candidate and they prefer UPA to NDA led BY BJP. There is no contradiction in UPA constituents and allies as well as Left supporting Pranab Mukherjee. We definitely hold Kalam in high regard but cannot have the same person as Presidential candidate again and again. Despite his capabilities, Pranab Mukherjee is also not candidate for all future Presidential tenures.

Now P. Sangma also came in race as per todays news.

There are still attempts to persuade Kalam to contest Presidential elections. But nobody can assure him victory unless there is 'conscience vote' from U.P.A. and Left. However, UPA constituents and Left have no 'conscience' and they will vote according to party line. Possibly, some of NDA constituents may vote with 'conscience' which will favor Pranab Mukherjee. Pranab Mukherjee is 'Sankat Mochak' (crisis manager) and there is no doubt that he will win despite any odds or new developments.
