Has anybody wondered about the birth of one day cricket? The common perception is that people obviously wanted a different format of the game. The idea was to have variety in viewing both formats of the game and enjoy it. It is like having a choice of movies having the genre, action or thriller movies.
Now coming to birth of 20:20. The common perception is one day cricket is too boring and predictable. However if viewed from a different angle, the reasons for birth of 20:20 has got nothing to do with cricketing reasons. It has got more to do with our mindset and advancement in information technologies.
At one point of time waiting in queues in banks were very common as it was a necessity those days. When ATMs were introduced, that was the end of queues as people had a choice. Now with online payments like RTGS and EFT, ATMs too have become a burden. Those days of standing in queue for making utility payments are gone as it is done online these days.
Therefore the reason for birth of 20:20 has more to do with our high expectations and total lack of patience. In this situation, it is difficult to see even 20:20 lasting long enough. In the next 10 years we could see a situation of 5 over per side as is played in clubs, schools and colleges.
The longevity of any form of cricket or event solely depends on our mindset, levels of patience and expectations.
