ajowan (trachyspermum amni) is an herbaceous annual plant bearing the greyish brown fruits (seeds) which constitute the spice. The dried fruits find its use as anti-sposmadic, anti-flatulent, anti-rheumatic, diuretic and anti-microbial. The thymol, chief constitutent of ajowan essential oil is an excellent mouth wash and widely used in tooth paste industry. Ajowan , an important seed spice of A.P. is grown on commercial scale in Rayala seema and Telangana regions of the state as a rainfed crop in an area of morethan 10,000 ha. in the absense of high yielding varieties, the prodctivity of ajowan in the state is low, with an objective of developing high yielding varieties in ajowna, survey was made in ajowan growing areas of the state, and collections made were evaluated for their performance.
