1.Introduction: Sustainable means, long lasting so, sustainable development means a long lasting development. Nature has given the so many resources in abundance, like clear water, sunshine, fresh air and blue sky. These days these resources are polluted up to such level that you can not see the water of the rivers without the industrial or household chemicals and different colors of it. Initially water had no color. Air is so much polluted that it is hard to judge if the Sun is shining or not. Remember the earth, water and the air are not a gift to us from our parents but a loan from our children, it means we have to make it more fresh and healthy after we leave this place, so that our children can live in prosperity.
When everything i.e. society, economy and environment is in balance, harmony and happy for a long lasting time then it is called a sustainable development.
2.Current situation: The situation is like this: The resources are getting consumed in a high speed, and also the desires are increasing at high speed, which are considered as the needs, but actually they are not the needs. The population itself is a problem for so many countries, like India. The situation could be harmonious if all the three society, economy and environment grow together, but if you take anyone, say society there are the cases like "Delhi Gang Rape" which itself shows the current situation. If you take the environment, look at the holiest river of the Ganga, read about the cancer patients at the places of Punjab and states where Green revolution took place. The farms are so much flooded with the pesticides and uria that the people and animals who eat them are having the problems like of cancer.
The Malwa region of the Punjab is facing this problem because for the paddy crop the area was flooded with the chemicals and now the grains and vegetables transfer them to the human and animals and making it an epicentre for the cancer. There is a need to switch to the organic farming, in which one will use the organic wastes, and dung of the animals for their crop production in place of the urea.
The cities like Delhi in India and many other countries in the world use the CNG(compressed natural gas) in the place of the gasoline(Petrol) as fuel because it produce less amount of CO2. This is not going to help much because the number of vehicles is still increasing and also the efficiency of the vehicle engines is less.
2.1.1. The major pollutants which are responsible for the greenhouse effect: Here is the list of the gases which are major 5 pollutants(Green House Gases) as per my knowledge:
a) Carbon Di-oxide (CO2) b) Sulphur Di-oxide c) Nitrogen Oxide d)Particulate matter(water vapour) e) Ground level ozone
These five together and the sun rays form the smog. Which is sometimes known as the California smog and London smog. Breathing in such air results in the cancer.
The other pollutant matters are depleting the ozone layer at the required altitude. Ground level ozone is also harmful because it also absorbs the heat the level where it is not required.
3. Solution: I will discuss it in two parts, one is about what an average person can do in his/her day to day life and another is what Govt. and industry can do:
3.1.1 If you have vehicle which you use daily then you should take following precautions:
1) If your vehicle is idle for more than 30 seconds, switch off the engine. Only start the cehicle when you are ready to go.
2) Match your vehicle to your need, there is no meaning of buying a 500cc motor cycle if you are the person who will sit in it, and it is used to go to office.
3) Service your vehicle engine regularly because it increases its efficiency and there by is much safer for you and environment also.
4) If possible leave your vehicle at home when really not needed.
3.1.2. There are some other day to day habits which can be corrected and can lead to safer environment:
1) Don't smoke, because it is harmful for your body, your pocket and environment.
2) Don't waste electricity and water, save them, otherwise they will become the reason for the third world war.
3) Don't aim to accumulate the things at your home, buy only those which you really need for your use. Make a list of the cloths you have, the chair you have, the utensils you have and you will be surprised with the data. People have the tendency to buy the things, but remember the things are made of the natural resources and if you buy them only to replace the others then you are wasting the nature.
4) Always aim to recycle the things which you have the knowledge of.
3.2 On the larger scale: On the larger scale our industries and the Govt. should aim to harness the renewable sources of energy. It is good that India is holding the 3rd or 4th position in the production of the Wind energy. Other sources are like, Solar energy, Geothermal energy, Hydro electricity including the tidal energy and biomass energy. If there is a good sunlight at your home then you should buy a solar cooker for your home.
Solar energy uses the Sun rays, Hydro electricity is produced by using the potential or kinetic energy of water, tidal energy is produced by using the water tides, wind energy is produced by using the high speed winds, and biomass energy is produced by using the plants. So there are so many options to follow rather than focusing just on the thermal, and nuclear energy. There is a need of constant research for the invention of the new products, new sources of the running the vehicles, and the most important is the understanding in the human. Ths article is aimed to make you understand that it is me and you who can save this nature and environment by following the tips which I have given above.
