The presence of even a small home garden can benefit the family enormously- economically, aesthetically and also healthwise. However with the ever increasing population leading to the decrease in the landholding of the family, the simple pleasure of gardening is limited to a few priviledge people. To cope up with this problem, people all over the world have developed different methods of gardening in space constraints area. Mention may be made of the following popular method of gardening.
Floating Garden: It is an indegeneous method of Gardening in Inle Lake of Myanmar. People construct gardens in the river beds. It however requires a lot of hard work. Few months prior to the constrctions of the garden, the farmer would harvest a kind of weed in the deeper part of the lake. These are then transported to the gardensite in a boat and then spread over. The garden area is held in position with bamboo poles. The incoming water bring the nutrients from the river and enrich it.
Roof-top gardening: This is another method of Gardening which is becoming popular particularly in the European countries.The Initial investment is high as the roofs need to be made strong enough to support a small garden. Soils are spread and shallow rooted crops are planted. In Egypt however, soil are not spread directly on the roof but on a big table. Vegetables and fruit plants are then planted. on it
Container garden: The garden is created by planting crops in various pots and containers. What adds to its popularity is that discarded things like old sack, barrels, food containers etc can just as easily be used to plant crops. It also doesn't require any large space. Any nook and corner could be used conveniently for growing plants.
Gardening in Community areas: In some countries, common land is used for gardening. It can be done either way- individual plots given to individual family or many families working together and sharing the harvest equally.
