Benjamin Spock ,is an American pediatrician, author, and also a political activist. He is best known for his best-selling book, "The Common Sense Book of Baby and Child Care" in the year 1946, and this book sharply redefines the course of child care during the baby boom after World War II and the front cover of that book is shown below.
He was on may 2, 1903 in New Haven, Connecticut and he studied at Yale University in New Haven . In 1929, he received his medical degree from Columbia University in New York City. He set up his own practice in 1933, after practicing and teaching pediatrics at New York Hospital and Cornell Medical College
In his famoy selling book "The Common Sense Book of Baby and Child Care", Spock’s on child rearing broke dramatically from accepted practices that favored rigid feeding habits and considered hugging children inappropriate. He also encouraged all the parents to be flexible with their children and also insisted thet they should be shown greater affection. This book was enormously popular, and more that a million copy was selled within a year, during that time.More that 50 million copies was sold in 1998 and it was also translated to 40 different languages.
He started to became a leading figure when he was against the Vietnma War and he also hold many demonstartions, and for this reason ,in 1968 he was sentenced to two years in prison for conspiring to aid resistance to the draft , but a federal appeals court overruled his conviction. He also ran for president as the candidate of the left-wing People's Party in 1972, and four years later he was the party's vice-presidential nominee. Till 80's he remained active,by giving lectures opposing nuclear weapons.
He eventually died at the age of 94 on March 15,1998
