I had heard many times and read at various places that might is right. I did not really know the meaning when I saw a practical example of the same. The example is my very own personal experience. It goes something like this:
One of the most hopeless things in India is the traffic. People hardly have any traffic sense and that is what causes many accidents, in my opinion. Hundreds of freak accidents take place in this huge country and not even a handful of them are reported. Most of the accidents take place due to lack of commonsense. This ‘accident’ like situation that I saw with my eyes is still very much fresh in my memories.
It was a good topic to write on and so here I am trying to present the incident as honestly as possible. In India, according to traffic rules, it is ‘keep left’ – vehicles are driven from the left hand side of the road. What I saw was an auto driver who was ahead of me by around 15 meters or so, suddenly turned to the right side of the road.
This means he was directly becoming a stumbling block for those who were coming from the opposite direction. Maybe, he wanted to make a stop there. But he turned so suddenly that the vehicles coming from the opposite direction were taken by surprise and one of them found it hard to control his bike abruptly.
The auto driver didn't give any signal before turning and he was totally to be blamed at that point in time. There was a mild collision as it was expected. The auto driver beat up the poor boy who was riding a bike for ‘coming in his way’ when the biker was at no fault at all. Everyone who saw that knew who was at fault and who was innocent. But no one spoke anything and left away.
Due to the increasing traffic all over, incidents like these always happen almost everywhere. Sometimes, it happens due to the heavy traffic and no one is at fault. At times it happens when one of the two people are at fault. There are occasions when people get into scuffle and neither of them is ready to back off. Words soon translate into punches and things take unpleasant and unwanted turns.
However, things aren't very common when only one person dominates the other. Even rarer are the occasions when the innocent person faces the brunt of the situation just because he is weak and cannot resist.
But it is indeed the increasing number of vehicles and population that has to be blamed in the first place. The space remains as it is and it is getting congested day by day with the ever-increasing number of pedestrians, cyclists and all kinds of autos plying on the road.
If any solution isn't found for this problem, we will soon see a drastic picture where the government will be forced to intervene with stricter rules being laid down. And what about the constant pollution the vehicles are causing everywhere?
