Each and every year, Assam has to face a giant problem, flood. Flood, which is regarded as one of the most devastating forces of nature is destroying many resources of Assam including the human resources every year. Assam is a valley of hills and rivers. Two major rivers, Brahmaputra and Barak and their many tributaries wash the Brahmaputra and Barak Valley in every rainy season. In the rainy season, the village people of Assam prays to God with trembling hearts as they never know when these very friendly rivers become unknown and monstrous and devour them.
Now the question is that why every year Assamese people has to face the flood? Doesn’t the government take any kind of precaution? In this 21st century also why Assam cannot control its lifeline Brahmaputra? If nature is really uncontrollable, then how China can transfer Howangho, the sorrow of China into its blessing and why it’s neighboring country India cannot? If we will seek the answers, then we will find that how this issue is neglected by the concerned authority and how corruption is making it more hazardous.
IIn Assam every year huge amount of money and other aids are granted to the Brahmaputra Board, the flood control board of Assam. But this money is never used the way it should be used. Most of it goes to the pocket of the officers and engineers and also the contractors. As a result, only a small portion is used for the proper cause. Even it is also seen that instead of the proper barriers, the contractors uses banana trees to prevent the mighty waves of the river. So, the result is in front of us. The water easily crosses the limit and over pours its shores. May be it seems funny, but no one can even imagine the real situation if he doesn’t face the real situation with their own eyes. For the officials of the flood control board, every year flood comes like a festival when they surely earn a large amount of bonus income.
Now, the central and the state government are again paving another easy way for flood. They are beginning a large dam on Brahmaputra in Arunachal Pradesh and Assam. Even now when Arunachal and Meghalaya release the extra water of their existing dams, it overflows Assam. When these under construction huge dams will work with its full vigor, what will happen we can easily imagine. The experts had already showed many dangerous side effects with this warning. Under the leadership of Akhil Gogoi, Krishak Mukti Sangram Samiti and other organizations and local people are protesting against it. Even Anna Hazare and Medha Patkar are also supporting it. But, every time government is showing its thumb to the people of Assam.
Lastly, China is also constructing a huge dam in the great band of Brahmaputra in Tibet. It will suck the lifeline of Assam in summer and will make it another desert like Thor. And in rainy season? Only God knows what will happen. Indian Government is not paying any heed to it because it can hamper their relationship with China. But, is this relationship much more important than the life of its own state Assam? May be Government is thinking that as there will be no Brahmaputra then there will be no flood in Assam.
