Kastur Ba was very upset. Her husband wanted her to do something which she never dreamed of doing.
Gandhi and his wife Kastur Ba were in South Africa. Gandhi was helping the Indian laborers who were treated worse than animals by the white rulers of that country.
``You must help in the cleaning of the toilets’’, he said. She refused. Her husband would not take `no’ for an answer. ``No work is menial. You do not become small in importance’’.
Kastur Ba understood that labor has its dignity. All works is important and should be treated with respect. And she did go out to clean the toilets.
Shramadaan Volunteering your time and offering t do something for good cause or to help society is called ``Shramadaan’’. It’s like donating you labor. Learn how little effort labor on our part can do wonders for us, and those around us.
• In 1958 years Lake Sunkhna was created at the foothills of Shivalik. The eighties saw a drastic fall in its water level affecting the environment. The people in charge did not take this seriously.
Good citizens and students could not bear it. They came to the rescue. Many pairs of hands worked and desalted Sunkhna. Shramadaan of these people made the lake look good once again.
• In the district Latur in Maharashtra, Ismailbadi is enjoying the rewards of Shramadaan. Students offer Shramadaan to keep the roads and water wells clean. They also beautify the landscape. Water supply of drinking water from the wells is also managed by them
• Have you ever visited a Gurudwara? When you do, do not be surprised if you see a general in simple clothes, bare feet, sweeping and mopping floors doing ``Kar Sewa!’’.
Child labor
Child labors our country and many other countries have an ugly side-child labor. One is the sad story of Puneet in class 4. Children, even younger than you, are working to help out their parents. It is a huge problem. Each one of us needs to help them.
It was 3rd of September, when my life suddenly changed a bit, or perhaps the whole of it, when my dad left, leaving me alone in the hostel. Shocking, for a moment i felt and i said to myself “oh my god! What am I going to do now?”. Many questions started coming to my mind, some of which scared me, for I was thousands of kms away from my home, a place where i have been staying since my birth and along with my dearest ones. Then, one call from mom, and i started feeling stronger than the strongest of myself. Anyways, atleast for that moment, i had made myself strong enough to tolerate the toughest of conditions. But hold on!!!! i was so damn wrong about my definition of “toughest condition” for, the very next day, i experienced a thriller of my life, when i had an encounter with my some of my seniors.
“SENIORS”, a word that had been petrifying me since my admission into the college. I was getting used to the furniture in my room when suddenly someone knocked the door. Thinking that it would be my roommate, I opened the door. To my surprise, there were two bulky fellows standing in a strange manner, with their hands on each other’s shoulder and one of them holding a half litre bottle of a cold drink.. They came inside as if it was there room. One of them broke the ice saying “so, we are your seniors. Welcome to the hostel, dude.” No sooner did I make their good impression in my mind, than one of them started yelling at me “You idiot! Don’t you greet your seniors? Ok give your introduction.” I started shivering, remembering the previous day’s news about the death of a student during ragging. Somehow, without harming me, both of them went away and i felt so much relieved.
Days started passing gradually and i started getting used to the new environment. It was completely a new experience for me staying in the hostel and interacting with students from every nook and corner of our country having different cultural backgrounds. Hostel is just a small representation of our society, so we can find people with different attributes very easily. Some students want to be the leader, some like to stay aloof from everyone, Some are compulsive shopper and spendthrift while some don’t even take out their single penny. Some are superb sportsmen, some are nerds. Some like to socialize while some don’t. The other thing that i learnt in this hostel was to get accustomed to the new lifestyle which was completely different from the homely luxurious life. Sharing a room with someone, getting all of my work done myself, getting used to the “RESPECT THE SENIORS” environment etc were some of the difficult to do things initially but gradually everything became a habit.
As of now I've had a lot of experience of the hostel life and have learnt and still learning many new things in my life. I hope these days would be the most memorable and pleasing days of my life.
Many times we believe in what people tell us. We do not try to find out the truth ourselves. I know it is true because it is written in the newspaper. I think it is true because some one told me.
I know it is true because all are saying so.
Is this a good reason to believe in something?
We sometimes believe in superstitions, because we never try to find our truth.
*Scientific attitude means, you should think, see for yourself and then believe.
Ram was very fond of watching movies. He used to go and watch any movie that was shown in the theater near their house. His mind was thus always full of thoughts of the movies and the stories that he read.
One day he saw a horror movie. The movie had all kinds of strange animals. Miles long snakes. Dinosaurs and many other such things were being shown. Many times Ram slipped to the edge of his seat out of fear.
After the movie his mind was still full of those strange animals that nearly jumped out of the screen at him. He had controlled his screams with some difficulty in the movie-hall. When he was returning home after the movie, his heart was still thumping. It was growing dark; he suddenly saw a snake on the road and jumped. He ran to a nearby street and again looked at the snake.
``Such a big snake,’’ he said, ``It is surely a cobra’’.
Then he saw an old man coming that way. The old man was going towards the snake.
Ram got still more scared. He thought perhaps the old man can’t see and soon he will step on the cobra and the snake will bite him…
So he started shouting.
``Don’t go that side. Come this way.’’
There is a snake there, a big cobra lying right across the road.’’
`What are you talking? There is no snake here. I have just gone from here,’’ said the old man and put his torch on.
``Come here,’’ he called Ram. ``Come and see. There is no snake here. It is just a rope lying on the road.’’
Ram came near the old man. He saw in the light of the torch. It was just a rope which he had thought to be a snake.
There have been times in life when all seems lost. You feel miserable. Your best friend, it seems is too busy for you. Its pouring with rain and the whole world is against you. Life just isn’t worth living through another day. You have just broken your most treasured ornament, the car broke down, you locked your self out and if that wasn’t enough you have just had a fight with your boss about a trivial matter not even worth mentioning.
At times like this we wonder why life has given us such a raw deal. Then you need to remember the things that are important to you. For as low as we fall there is always something or someone, somewhere, to help pull you back from the deep pits of darkness. Once you feel yourself slipping don’t be scared to grab on to that something or someone. Love, Hope and Faith will guide us. Look around and find the things you need to live for. The people you love and the friends you cherish. If we look hard enough, we will find the place you need to be. Until then you can make the most of what you have, give the most that you can, love the best you can.
Each morning wake up and thank god you are still alive, to live another day to find your way. There are people with worse worries than you. Life is truly worth living for, if you look at the beauty that surrounds you. Its ok to be grumpy once in a while after all life is not a bed of roses everyday but remember the grumpy mood will pass, there’s always a rainbow after the rain, sunshine after a cloudy day and happiness follows sadness. So instead content yourself with the little things, which bring you pleasure and tomorrow, will be a new day with a new beginning……..
In the present day world, man has progressed in such a way that with a click of a button, we can reach every nook and corner of this world. But at the same time we have witnessed an unprecedented fall in our moral values. The society in which we live includes people having different attributes. Each one has a different way of getting the work done. This leads to multi sect society namely “the Black”, “the whites” and “the grey”. Our society is getting corrupted day by day. The root cause of degrading moral values is “The black” sect of our society. Elaborating the point the black includes those people who are totally corrupted to the core. These people are materialistic in their approach and hence they just want to make money irrespective of the ways they use to make it. They don’t care about anyone else in the world. As an example a few days back one of my friend went to a regional passport office to get his passport made. He tried a lot to get it done legally done but the corrupted “babus” in the office didn’t let this happen. Obviously, after that my friend got it made the other way by paying them a little bribe. These “babus” come under the category of “the blacks”. They don’t really care about their reputation or status. They can sell anything for money. On the other hand we have another category people who are “The whites” Though, people under this category are seldom found in real world but still they exist. Most of them are religious to the core of their heart.
In the present day world, being a “white” means having wisdom along with an upright character which is almost impossible in the real world. Virtually we can have a view of those who are extremely good, helping and have all the traits of a saint but in the present situation, the dominant blacks do not make it easy and don’t let it happen. According to a survey, in India only, there are more than 60% corrupted people who adore money more than anything else that makes more than half the people come under the category of “The Blacks”. Why is India leading as one of the most corrupted country? The other half of the population cannot stay aloof and be the “white” ones and always be legally, morally and ethically right. Some or the other time they have to have an interaction with the corrupted people and get their work done. This arises another sect of people that is the “Greys”. It includes people who themselves are not corrupted but appreciate the blacks and act accordingly and get their work done by false ways. This sect is responsible for the Blacks becoming more dominant.
Referring to the earlier example my friend who got his work done finally by an illegal way was forced to turn “grey” from white and the reason being the black! We cannot stay completely white in this corrupted world where everyone race against time for the sake of acquiring more and more money. Does that mean money is the root cause of this? Up to some extent yes it is! It is accompanied by want of power. People who want to be the leader, and who want to be one who are treated like god adopt bad and unworthy ways of being the same and then convert the whites to the greys. Now the question arises that would we unsuccessful being a white? Do we need to change ourselves just because of the dominance of the blacks? The answer is a straight forward No!! Indeed, we just need to change ourselves, our character in such a way that we are determined irrespective of the dark forces acting against us for it still holds that “THE GOOD WINS AND THE BAD LOSES EVENTUALLY” even in this advanced world. We just need to be pure from inside no matter what the blacks do!! Walt Emerson, an American educator once said “What lies behind us and what lies before us are tiny matters compared to what lies within us”. This encourages us not to get influenced by those blacks and keep on doing good to humanity and mankind irrespective of what we get in return for There is no point at which you can say, 'Well, I'm successful now. I might as well take a nap.'
