In a small village in Bengal lived a young girl. Once she went with her father to visit Calcutta where her husband was living. It was a distance of about 60 miles. Since they were poor they had to cover the distance by walking only. The whole day they walked and walked. When it was dusk the girl got exhausted.
She held her father’s hand and said, “Father, I cannot walk any further. Let us rest.” The father found that the girl was exhausted and had fallen ill. He immediately stopped and found a small hut nearby where they could spend the night. The girl was shivering with fever. She was very thirsty. The father went out to fetch some water for her. The girl had now a wonderful dream. A small girl came and sat near her. The visitor was black in color but her face was shining. She looked very beautiful. She stroked gently our girl’s body with her soft hands. The girl asked, “who are you?” The dream girl replied. “Oh! I am your sister. I am coming from Calcutta.” The girl was happy to hear the name of Calcutta. “I also want to go there. My husband is there. He is a pujari in Dakshineswar temple. But I have fallen ill. What shall I do?” The girl asked.
The dream girl laughed and said, “Don’t worry, my child. I know him and I am protecting him. I reside in that temple. Tomorrow you will be all right and you will meet him.” Saying so, the dream girl disappeared. The dream broke. The girl’s fever too had gone. She felt fresh in the next morning. She could continue to walk. She reached Calcutta and was warmly received by her husband. The girl was none other than Sarada Devi who is worshipped today all over the world as the Holy Mother. She was going to Dakshineswar at Calcutta to meet her husband Sri Ramakrishna. The girl who appeared in her dream was ‘Mother Kali’ of Dakshineswar temple. Sarada Devi was pure and very devoted to God. So the Divine Mother appeared to her and guided her. God always helps those who trust in him.
