One morning, a fat little cock crowed from the top of a wall.
A fox heard his crowing. `I must get that cock for breakfast,’ he thought. So he came and sat down below the wall.
`Friend cock, why do you sit so high and away?’ said the fox, `why, we are all friends now’.
`How?’ asked the puzzled cock.
`So you have not heard the good news! All the beasts and birds have now decided top be good friends,’ said the fox cunningly. `No one will now do any harm to the other. All will live in peace.’
`That is wonderful news, friend,’ replied the cock. But he knew how foxes were. So he did not really believe him.
`It is indeed!’ said the fox again. `Now foxes and cocks can be friends. No fox will kill and eat a cock now. So why not come own?’
The cock knew why the fox was calling him down. So he turned his neck and seeded to look far away, as if he saw something.
`Aha! Friend fox,’ said the cock, `More our friends are coming this way. It will be a great get-together today!’
`And who is that you see?’ asked the fox, a bit alarmed.
`It is only a pair of hounds. They are perhaps coming to meet us here,’ the cock answered cunningly.
Hearing of the hounds, the fox started to run away.
`Why, friend fox’ the cock called out, `would you not see our new friends? They will not do you any harm now.’
But the fox did not stop. He shouted back and said, `but friend, they may not have heard the good news.’
One evening, the fox came to a village to steal chickens. But he was caught in a trap by his tail. The fox pulled and pulled, but the tail would not come out.
`I am sure to be killed now’, thought the fox. `The farmer’s dogs will find me here in the morning. They will tear me to pieces.’
The fox pulled harder now. He put all his strength together and gave a strong jerk. `Snap,’ the tail broke and the fox was at last free.
