The Indo-American relations have been undergoing a kind of transformation in recent years. In fact the relations between two democracies remained surprisingly paradoxical in nature in the earlier decades. It is one of the ironies of life that the United States of America despite it democratic professions has aligned itself with some of the totalitarian regimes of the world and had a blinkered vision of the world . The blinkers were one of self-interest and the expediencies of real politic. Thus it aided the Shah of Iran to establish his dictatorial regime for decades together with moral and material support. The late Shah armed himself to the teeth with most advanced weapons provided by USA but could not save his regime and had to flee his country when his regime was overthrown in the most inglorious manner by the people of Iran. Such instances are too many. And one of such instances is its relationship with Pakistan and created the Frankenstein that Pakistan is today.
The human race breathed easy and felt relieved with the end of the Second World War but the sense of relief lasted for a very short time. What immediately followed was another kind of war- Cold War between two super-powers -the USA and the former USSR. In the earlier days of Cold War the USA was desperately looking a country to act as pointsman in the region to check the influence of Communist Russia. As India's relationship with the USSR grew close and cooperation in diverse fields manifested , this invited suspicion as well as ire from the USA. Thus started a new chapter in The USA-Pakistan relationship. Taking full advantage of the paranoia of the USA about India, Pakistan succeeded in grabbing the US aid and funds which were used against India in fighting so many wars and in raising a terror infrastructure and funding Jihadi movement. As these were happening the USA just looked the other way and its attitude against Pakistan was one of indulgence.
The fall of twin towers which was one of the most horrible terrorist attacks in the history masterminded by the elements in Pakistan made the US sit up and have a hard look at its Pakistan policy. With the fall of former Soviet Russia and end of Cold war, Pakistan no longer fingers as prominently but it can not dump its former ally altogether given to the fact it is a nuclear power and all the jihadi groups and taliban elements are all based in Pakistan. Pakistan's role has been substantially reduced to fighting the same forces which it created to export terror! Thus giving birth to a new climate for Indo-US relationship in which India's importance has been steadily growing in the scheme of things of the US Administration keeping China's emerging Super Power status. India needs to leverage the compulsions of the USA to its advantage.
