New music centered on the disco movement. It was promoted by films such as Saturday night fever and by a revival of interest music by black artists such as James Brown. Disco artists include the Bee Gees and Donna Summer.
Pop music became lighter and more concerned with dance rhythms. Major pop artists and groups included Michael Jackson, the pet Shop Boys, Madonna, and Duran -Duran. Pop videos, in which the music was set to a piece of film, made it possible for a performer to be seen on television by millions at the same time as the release of their record.
A specialized form of dance music, called house music, based on very rapid rhythms and electric sounds. The technology for making and mixing these new sounds is now widely available to musicians and their music has since branched into the related styles of acid house, techno, trance, ambient, and jungle music.
Indian music
The two type of music are folk and classical. Classical music in India is based on the Gharana system.
The Hindustani music of north India and the carnatic music of south India are the two style of classical music. Music is also divided into vocal and instrumental; singing and playing. Pandit Ravisankar, Alla Rakha, Ali Akbar Khan and Bismillah Khan are some of the famous musicians of our country.
M.S Subba lakshmi is famous vocalist in carnatic music, and Pandit Bhimsen Joshi is famous vocalist in Hindustani music. Sitar, flute, Sarod, Shehnai, Tabala, Veena, Dholak and Mridangam are few among the different instruments used in classical music. There are different `ragas’ melodies for different times, occasions and even seasons.
Dance is an important part of Indian cultural life. Folk and classical are the two type’s pf dance forms. It is based on beats and rhythms. Bharatanatyam, Kuchipudi, Odissi, Manipuri, Yakshagana, Kath kali and Kathak are some of the dance forms in India. They require training and practice.
Folk dance is a group dance performed by villages and tribal people to express joy and happiness like change of seasons, birthday and marriage. They are simple to perform and they do not have special beats or rhythm.
Bhagra in Punjab, Ghoomas in Rajasthan, Garbha in Gujarat, Nati in Himachal Pradesh, Tamasha in Maharastra, Bihu in Assam and Chhau in Bihar are some of the examples of folk dance.
