When we go back to history, it was totally impossible to transfer or send any information to our friends, located in different parts of the country. When we consider the history, in olden days, Kings will transfer any data by using birds. They used to tie the message, written in a paper, in the bird’s leg and as a result the bird will travel to the destination, as it was aware of it.

But when the development takes place, people followed different technology and it started with telephone and radio. But practically they could only speak using these instruments and they need to transfer any files or documents to their friends anywhere in the world.

Then came the best feature of the internet, and this is e mail, which was developed in the 1990’s. They were used to send message for one user to another user with the help of their computer and also using commercial e-mail programs or mail-user agents (MUAs).Another important feature of this e mail is that people can transfer data and documents not only to one user but also to multiple recipients.

Whenever we send any mail form our computer it goes to a network called as Message transfer agent (MTU) and depending upon the address we give the message is delivered either to the computer in the same network or it is passed to other MTA, so that the information travels via internet. But recently in a survey it was reported that the use of email will slowly come down and this mainly due to social networks like Twitter, Face Book, Orkut etc.

The reports also say the young people don’t give the top priority to e mail, when compared with that of these networks and states that in the case internet users in the age group of 15-24, only 86 percent people use emails more often, compared to 96 percentage e mail usage by people in the age group of 45-64 This 86 percentage will still go down and within 20 years this will be become very low.

The reason why people prefer these social networks to e mail that, these social networks provides a variety of facilities like live chat , conference chatting and many other, which is not available in e mail.

But developments are being made to make sure that e mail usage doesn’t get extinct. I still believe, people chose e mail to transfer bulk amount of data. So let’s hope that people use all the good facilities often and make the best use of it.
