‘Co-Education’ means ‘teaching boys and girls at the same school’ or ‘teaching men-students and women-students at the same college or institute’. Co-education is found at all primary schools. But it is not found in all high-schools,higher secondary schools and colleges. There are high schools and higher secondary schools only for girls as well as those only for boys. There are men’s colleges and women’s colleges. Nevertheless, the importance of co.-education is felt in modern time and, more and more coeducational institutions are coming up.
At the coeducational institution boys and girls or ladies and gentlemen see each other everyday and are social with each other. The natural shyness of girls or ladies disappears and they freely and fearlessly converse with boys or gentlemen, they understand each other’s nature- boy’s or girl’s nature at the school and man’s or woman’s nature at the college and give up their wrong views on it. They often develop a healthy competitive spirit in learning and in competitions in music, oratory, elocution, and in essay writing. A lady- student can inspire a lazy or dull gentlemen student with a love for hard work at the studies and make him an above the average student. But the rivalry in studies should not give room to envy, malice or wicked plotting.
Behaving towards each other in a social but an honorable way from the beginning will make them keep up the same characters when they settle down in life and become members of the society. It will lead to the formation of a healthy and happy life for the whole nation.
At the coeducation institution boys and girls or ladies and gentlemen look start, well-dressed, lively and active. They do not indulge in teasing or in using nasty words. Discipline is automatically maintained by them at the school or at the college. There are people who do not like coeducation. They fear that some of the grown-up boys and girls may become immoral and ruin their lives. If regular moral teaching is given to all the students. It can be prevented . Some people think that a girl’s body and mind mature much more quickly than a boy’s and hence they cannot understand each other’s nature perfectly. It is true. But it does not affect either party as long as the matured girls do not select the immature boys for an immediate marriage.
It is said that girls and ladies need an education which is different from that of boys and gentlemen. But it is unnecessary to have two different kinds of education for them lest it defeats the purpose of coeducation, namely, the understanding of each other’s nature. In modern times women demand an equal status with men. They compete with men in employment, in intellectual attainments, in sports and games, in politics, in social service, etc. In all these things many women prove themselves to be equal to men and some women superior to men.
If girls and ladies are on their guard at the coeducation school and at the coeducation college against immoral temptations, coeducation will be a perfect success. The teachers and the authorities of the institution also should keep an eye upon the behavior of the students to make coeducation an ideal system of education in modern times.
