You all must have heard about The Glass Half Filled ( or probably 'Half Empty'). We have been always made to believe that the glass is half filled. Once in my class, this question was raised and as you would expect, almost all of them put their hand up, no need to specify, in whose favor were the hand raised ( probably an engineer like you and me would say that the glass is twice the size of what it should have been).
A cold rush ran through me and just thought 'What if I think that the glass is half empty?' This thought made me go round and round. I realized that a person who thinks that the glass is half empty is called as pessimist. Think about it. Is it really the case? Is he really thinking in a negative frame of mind? Doesn't it mean that when you say that the glass is half empty then you are not satisfied with the output that you have got and you basically want more? May I ask you, why should one be satisfied with what he has got? (Money may be exempted). Why shouldn't someone aim as high as possible? Remember, the ones who have a shot at goal post, are the ones who can score a goal. you just can't learn to swim by just sitting on the shore. So what's wrong if someone wants to swim against the tide?
What i mean to suggest is that there's nothing wrong in not being satisfied. The important thing is that one should be able to realize that goals are not always reachable. So if someone fails while aiming at it then it should always be accepted. So aiming at something without expecting to succeed really make the day for you, isn't it? So, again, may I ask you.. Is it really wrong, if you think that the glass is half empty if you know that you can fill it?
Hope you agree that pessimism is basically a better half of optimism.
