There are two types of reservations India which are given below:-
Caste Reservation:- Certain seats are reserved for students of backward castes. Say for example there are 100 seats in a college, 30 of them are reserved for backward castes and 70 for general students. 70 seats in general category are filled up purely on merit. Once these seats are filled up even if there is a student who has got 90% marks in general category, he/she cannot be accommodated in the quota of 30 seats reserved exclusively for backward class students, even if the student belonging to backward class has got only 40%.
Religious Reservation:- Special grants/facilities are given by Central & State Governments to people who belong to minority religions. The benefits come in the form of lesser taxes or free eduction among a host of other things.
Let me make my point very clear, I am not against reservations. There should be reservations and there has to be a criteria for reservation. Every Indian is not the same. Economic conditions differ. While few are rich, there are a lot who are very poor and live below the poverty line. Instead of reserving seats, free education should be given in the best of shcools & colleges to children whose parents cannot afford a decent education for them. They should also be entitled to all the facilities rich students are entitled to. This should be done irrespective of the caste the student belongs to. For example a poor Brahmin student should be taken better care of than a rich backward class student.
Similarly concessions should be given to people to discharge their religious duties to those who cannot afford due to financial constraints. Again there should be only one category to whom concessions should be applicable, i.e. the ones who cannot afford irrespective of their religion.
This reforms if brought in would put an end to all feuds on casteism & religion and we can boast of a truly secular India.
