Hai friends this article is about the Indians in Uganda.Well, i saw a movie called 'The Last King Of Scotland',
EDI AMIN
THE LAST KING OF SCOTLAND POSTER
which is a bout Idi Amin (Where the actor Forest Whitaker won Academy Award(Oscar) for Best actor)and and it is based on the Novel "The Last King Of Scotland" written by Giles Foden. In that film there was a scene where Idi Amin orders all Asians to leave Uganda in 90, and in the film they showed lot of Indians evacuating and that made to me find how Indians got settled in Uganda. The history goes like this,
# In 1860 more than 30,000 Indians Mostly Sikhs were taken to Uganda as a 3 year contract for clearing the jungle and also to lay railway track between Mombasa and Kampala.
# After finishing the contract Some Indians returned, Some stayed there and some died
# About 7000 Indains got settled in Uganda
# After that Gujarati traders joined them and they were in good economical position compared to that of the Uganda nationals
# And it was during Idi Amin dictatorship in 1972, 4th august, He gaved ordered that all Asians(mostly Indains) to leave Uganda in 90 days as he felt that they were wealsthy when compared to the local people
# Most of them , nearly 30,000, went to United Kingdom and rest returned India and some went to Canada,USA etc.
# This resulted in reduction in Indian poppulation in Uganda
# Later in 1978 Idi Amin was thrown out of power and he expelled to Saudi Arabia where he eventually died on 20th july 2003
# Again in 2007 there were riots in Uganda against Asians and they killed 2 Asians and burnt temple as Asians(Especially Indians) were rich and prosperous and they were against the expansion of the sugar farm and they were against cutting the trees for the expansion of the sugar farm owned by an Indian
# Then the riots were controlled and now they live peacefuly and there is also an association for Indians in Uganda and their website is www.ia-uganda.com.
