Generally when we do mistakes we try to escape from it what we call escape mechanisms. But strictly speaking it is not escape mechanism.I would like to call it as defence mechanism. I would say escape mechanism as one of the defence mechanism.
Defence mechanisms:
when an individual is faced with problems, difficulties or failures, he employs certain ways to achieve health or happiness. There are differnt types of defence mechanisms.
1. Rationalization
2. Projection
3. Compensation
4. Escape mechanism
5. Displacement
6. Regression
1. Rationalization:
Individual instead of accepting failure tries to make excuses and justifies his/her behaviour.
for eg., Suppose if he/ she go late to school and when someone asks why he/she is late. The individual instead of accepting their late start to school, they blame the traffic. This is called rationalization.
2.Projection:
If an individual blames others for their mistakes it is called projection.
for eg., The individual not scoring well in an examination blames his/her teacher for not liking the individual.
3.Compensation:
Individual in order to hide their weakness in one they try to compensate in other field. This is called compensation.
for eg., Individual weak in studies will try to compensate by participating in sports and other cultural activities.
4.Escape mechanism:
eg., Some people take alcohol or IV drugs in order to escape from love failure.
Some people pretend to be ill in order to escape from examinations.
5.Displacement:
eg. Some clerk or low cadet official snubbed higher cadet in the office takes it out to the people at home. This is what is called rebound phenomenon. Showing the anger on one but the real anger is on somebody else. This is called displacement.
Iit means trying to escape from one situation and fix blame on other situation.
6.Regression:
Some people defend by resorting to some of the childhood activities.
eg. Some people weeps to defend their mistakes.
These are the various modes of adjustments the individual adopts to escape from realities. This is either to hide their faults or to run away from troubles.
A mentally healthy person will not use any of the defence mechanism to escape from faults or run away from troubles in order to acheive success.
