It was during the stone age when Man discovered fire to make his work easier. He invented fire to keep himself warm. It was fire thath helped man to keep himself safe from dangerous animals. He also used fire for cooking food. Later on, with the development of man kind, man learnt to man weapons and used fire for creation and invention of many new thinks that changed his life. He became modern and civilised. However, incidences of fire are terrifying and panic stricken.
It was On 22nd March, 2010, The famous Stephen House burnt in fire, at Kolkata. Fire broke out when people were unaware and busy with their daily office work. In the mean time, Stephen House started burning in fire. Unable to guess the reason behind this fire, people began to run here and there for life. They tried to use the staircase but it was locked.
Men and women began to jump from heights. Some were hanging outside the windows. There was no provision for nets to help the victims. Everything was destroyed in fire. The rescue team was too late to reach the spot. Local people helped some of the victims to escape out of the burning house. Rest of the work was carried out by the police and the rescue team. The most shocking fact was, there was no provision for the hydraulic lift. Due to lack of provision for safety, people suffered a lot. Police arrested the care-taker and the maintenance officer of the building.
After 16 hours, situation came under control. 24 people died. A young girl lost her boyfriend, a son lost his father, a brother was searching for his sister and so on. Moreover they lost their heart when they saw the dead bodies. They were unidentified. Some how by looking at the belongings, they guessed their relatives. 10 people were missing.
Due to lack of facilities and irresponsibility of the maintenance officer and the care-taker, so many people suffered. Few days later, police came to know the real culprit behind this incident. It was the owner of the Stephen House. He was arrested and court send him for rigorous imprisonment.
