The Bhopal Gas Tragedy is one of the fearful calamities of the world of 20th century. This tragedy occurred on December 3, 1984 in Bhopal. Union Carbide Pesticide factory is located in the heart of Bhopal. This factory is U.S based multinational company. The gas tragedy happened because of leakage of a deadly gas known as ‘Methyl Isocynate’. The leakage of gas took place because of excessive pressure in the plant. Rather than this, the hung for money making compelled the management to reduce the cost of production. The Board of management appointed unskilled laborers in place of skilled laborers and the apparatus for the purpose of automatic safety alarm was out of order. No one was there seriously to watch about the lives of the people and environment. The gas affected as far as 40km in and around Bhopal. The gas spread so quickly that most of the people could not rescue of it. The blowing winds diffused it in the thickly populated area. The immediate effects of this poisonous gas were headache, giddiness, blurring of vision and pain in the chest. It attacked the eyes and lungs badly of many people causing blindness and clogging windpipes of the people.
The victims of the gas ran halter-skelter. The Hamida Hospital was overcrowded with swollen eyes and crying with painful chests. The whole city was under the grip of the gas. Everyone was afraid of it. Many charitable institutions and volunteer agencies rushed to help the helpless people. Medicines, food, blankets poured in to meet the challenge of the tragedy. Victims were poured in every second. It was the heart broken scene all around in Bhopal. Even the deaf could listen the cries of victims and their relatives. The agony of the people was lifelong.
The gas did not leave animals. Many more killed. The whole happy city of Bhopal was converted into a graveyard. It looked as if the entire humanity were weeping and crying with sorrow and pain. Nothing can be done to the people who suffered a lot and passed away early from this world. The people who were left helpless and in pain should be supported by our governments as well as by U.S. Government. It must be ensured by our government as well as by U.S. Government. It must be ensured by our government to use safety measures so that such type of tragedy can be avoided in future.
