Medical field is a rapidly growing field and new methods of treatment and diagnosis are evolving day by day. Treating a person using medicines only cannot better cure for some diseases. So integrating some new methods of treatment will help to solve this situation. Different therapies and treatment methods are used for this.
Gene therapy and cell therapy are the new comers in the treatment field. Cell therapy is derived from gene therapy. Both these methods have wide area of reach and can be implemented for the treatment of any kinds of diseases.
Gene therapy
We have to know about genes in order to know about gene therapy. Genes are the basic and functional unit of hereditary. Each human differ in the number of genes. But in a family two person’s will have copies of genes because genes determine the hereditary factors. Genes are transferred from father and mother to their children. The number of genes varies between 20,000 and 25,000 in each individual. Each individual vary in their characteristics and behavior because of a slight difference of 1% in their genes. Genes contain information about how to produce proteins. If genes are absent then production of protein doesn’t take place correctly. This can lead to genetic disorder of individuals.
Gene therapy is one of the experimental procedures for correcting gene disorders and to prevent diseases. The common form of gene therapy is to replace the infected or mutant gene cells with good ones. It also includes correcting the infected gene, swapping genes etc. Gene therapy doesn’t require intake of medicines. Although gene therapy can be used for treating various diseases some diseases like cancer and certain viral infections cannot be treated using this. Gene therapy can be used for the treatment of hereditary diseases like hemophilia, sickle cell anemia etc. Because of complex procedure of this treatment, this treatment is handled with at most care.
Cell therapy
Cell therapy is derived from gene therapy. Cell therapy is a concept in which body cells will be regenerative like the blood cells produced in the bone marrow and they are capable of healing themselves. The success of this treatment depends on the best mechanism for the transfer of the cells. Cell based therapy can be used in the treatment of arthritis and joint diseases. Arthritis patients suffer from damage of cartilage and their round shape will be deformed. For the treatment of this a jelly material is injected to the deformed cartilage to regenerate the deformed cartilage. The material injected will be autologous cultured chondrocytes. This treatment will be a key factor in the regeneration of skin, bone and even limb particles. But this treatment hasn’t grown to that level. We have to wait a little bit of time to reach that level if treatment.
