O-3 as a vitamin
O-3s is very essential for health. Although it didn't make a mark among the other fat soluble vitamins A,D,E, K. It was T.Holman, identified a deficiency state in 1920s, when the role of O-3s came into light. The incredible research into O-3 fats within the context of their role as an essential vitamin helps to explain O-3's sweeping effects on health & disease – affecting brain, heart, immunity & inflammation. O-3s are key building blocks of the brain & eyes (just like calcium for bones) as majority of the brain (60%) is composed of fats
O-3 fats can be derived from plant sources or seafood sources, mainly fish. Obviously, strict vegetarians will be lacking in O-3 types derived from fish. Thus it is a wrong impression that they are absolute in meeting their O-3 demands by sticking to vegetarianism. O-3s exist in 3 forms & their dietary sources -
ALA (short chained Fats) : beans, lentils, greens & fruits, berries, nuts, seeds, canola, olives & their oils
EPA & DHA sources (long chained Fats) : Fish & other Sea foods, lean meat (skinless, fatless), eggs & poultry
