Get up and listen

No comments on “Get up and listen”
If you have not spent much of time obsessing about sound as you have in the pursuit of the best HD or not picture in the last few years, you are forgiven. For whatever reason, the technology we’ve in contact with reached the level of “good enough” some years ago, and that’s where we have stopped. Case in point: performances. The concept of surround sound and multiple-channel audio has been…well…surrounding us since the 1940’s, with Disney Fantasia. And, how, we have the technology, so here we are. And this is the story with rock concerts too. We have been close and personal with the sound setups at our share of performances, and for all their sophistication, they really just boil down to “put speaker in room, and turn up the volume”. But a few years ago – somewhere near Mark Knoppler’s performance in Mumbai – in a casual conversion, somewhere brought this crazy idea: instead of using ten big speakers and hoping that they are loud enough to cover the entire auditorium, why not just use a hundred smaller speakers all around the auditorium? This way, you don’t walk the neighbors and you give everyone – even the cheapskates in the back – a better overall experience. Win – win. It’s highly possible that this someone threw the idea at the Fraunhofer Institute, because at CeBIT 2007, we saw it in action. IOSONO In its physical form, Fraunhofer’s ISONO technology is exactly what we just described: a continuous band of smaller speakers running along all four walls. The result’s however is the most immersive experience we’ve ever had, including the entire expensive tech we have been around in these offices. Also- and than one would think – we could walk up to the speakers and have our ears blown off. If you have ever walked up near the speakers at a club or concert, you will appreciate this. ISONO’s secret is the big sweet spot-of-the-hall sweet spot on this sweet spot business. But first… The Wave front - We hear sound because of the disturbances it creates in the air around our ears. If you think about it in slow motion, you can picture the sound leaving a speaker in expanding spheres. These spheres are called wave fronts, and when you are in their way, you hear sound. And some gets less intense with distance from speaker- too close and your eye ball may burst, too far and, well, why bother? We are building up to a point here………. The sweet spot - Picture yourself in say a movie theatre, the speaker like your households 5. 1 system, (if you in such a household) are placed on four corners of the room, and right in front with the screen. Each of these speakers is sending out sound in wave fronts for these entire speakers meet, you get to experience all the goodness of 5.1- channel audio – you are in a “sweet spot”. Unfortunately, most people watch their movies and concerts from outside the sweet spot. You may be one of the ten people getting the full experience. There’s a bit of advice you did not headed to the movies, pick seat in the centre of the theatre. Obviously, if more of us are to enjoy our things, we must all be in the sweet spot. One option would have been to place speakers really far from the audience space. In an alternate space, may be they do have enough real estate to do that. In our world, we must find another way. It’s called wave field’s synthesis. The simulation - Imagine this: you are about ten feet away from a large speaker, looking (hypothetically) at a wave front. This may be the optional non-eyeball-melting-but-still-loud-enough distance, but what if you don’t have ten feet to spare? What if you live in a high-rent dingy studio in the wrong of the wrong metropolis, curing your sad, pathetic ….sorry, sometimes we get carried away? Anyway, when you are pressed for space, like say a new multiplex in a crowded metro, it is possible to use an array of smaller speakers and mathematical algorithms or two to simulate that same wave front, just inches away from you. Creating a simulated wave front is simple enough. The speaker in the centre starts emitting sound first, the one on either side next, and so on. And there you are – if the speakers simulate the wave fronts at the sweet spot, suddenly the sweet spot becomes every spot that’s at least six inches away from the wall. And the big selling point here is that this works even with regular 5.1 audio as well, so it even makes business sense right here we are then. Interlude - We don’t really do this, but permit us, if you will get on our soapbox and yell for a bit. You see as the beginning of the article plainly suggests, the “future” of technology already exists. With loss less formats like FLAC, and gigabytes of space available for peanuts, it entirely possible for us to enjoy this because of good old human idiocy. Here’s how e got idea for a “future of sound” article: we have gone from CRT monitors to 22-inch HD capable screens in almost no time. We have gone from lugging around CDs and a portable CD player in a backpack, to dumping entire music collections on to a PMP and still have place left over. Our experiences with audio, on the other hand, have changed in decades, weather today or in 1979, there’s one way to bring a “concert experience” home – get the music in its purest form (no, not by kidnapping the band) put it through the best equipment money can buy (ideally the kind that the studios own) and turn up the volume. With ISONO, our concert experience may come closer to the experience of being in the studio with the artist. And if you can set up an ISONO system at home, you can bring the experience home as well. But the real problem – the rotten banana skin slip on- is what’s known as the “loudness war”. At some point in the jukebox era, recording industry executives decided that consumers were such brain-dead twits that they could not be asked to get up and turn up the volume when the noise in the car/cafe/establishment-of-your choice was drowning out of the song. And so decided to make “hot” masters recorded audio whose volume is artificially boosted to make them stand out more when they are played. This came to be regarded as a really good idea, so they kept doing it. We have labored under the impression that the audio on CDs is as good as it gets, but in reality, they are shining examples of artificially loud music – the boosted track required less digital space, and so it made sense to use this technique to cram in as many songs as possible. The worst part is that even through the audio CD, for all practical purposes, is dead, this practice continues. So, even though you can get yourself the best equipment, the best equipment the old garbage-in-garbage-out rule applies, and all that money would be spent for naught. But does this matter? When we take in to account economics, the demands of consumers, and other such factors that have nothing to do with technology, we come to one key phrase… Good enough - If you, like so many of us, like your music in your pocket while you travel, do you really think – even with sound cancelling headphone – that you are ever cared that the music is artificially “enhanced “? A sound gasm may be highly desirable, but its lack isn’t really going to tear the world in two. If you can get joy out of sound without caring that bitrates it’s reaching you at, then you probably aren’t even bothered about what this article is saying. If we demand great technology, it may or may not come. At least there will always be great music.

Review:
'Sarphira Sa Hai Dil'
This can be perhaps called the best track of the album which may be the reason for it being chosen for the trailers. A good choice of course. The song is sung by Shreya Ghoshal and Neeraj Shridhar. neeraj who has sung chartbusters for Pritam proves his mettle with this song that he can repeat the same with other music directors also. The song is definitely going to be a chartbuster. Shreya has given her best in the song

Tera Intezaar
The next song Tera Intezaar sung by Vijay Prakash and Gayatri Ganjawalla sounds more like a remix version. I hope sandesh has not forgot to include composition of the original or misplaced the remix for the original. The song by Vijay Prakash is more soft and lovely one . The track is surely next best.Vijay Prakash has the makings of another Hariharan .The singer who has sung mostly with AR Rahman is surely going to find his place with others also

Bhoore Bhoore Badal
Bhoore Bhoore Badal has Kunal Ganjawala and Shreya Ghoshal singing. The song reminiscea one of the popular tracks Gori tera gaon bada pyara from Chitchor of Rajshri productions. The song is very nice and one feels like being in jungle listening to the beats and the chirpy expressions in the song. This song is sure to look out for.

LOVE U MR. KALAKAAR
The title song sung by Kunal Ganjawalla is more like a situational song and the lyrics summarize the character and characterization. The difficulties faced by kalakaar in corporate world is the essence of the lyrics which is of course not so hummable lyrics. The song's remembrance is only the phrase Love you Mr kalakaar. Gayatri Ganjawalla has sung with Kunal which does not make much of difference. The track her rock arrangements and is hummable and light.

Kahin  se Chali aa
The song is sung by Mohit Chauhan and Shibani Kashyap. While Mohit owns the song with his vocals, Shibani seems so much uncomfortable. It feels like a lot of effort on her part to keep her voice on soft pitch for this song. The singer who proved her best with the songs like “Sajna Aa Bhi Jaa” and title track of Zinda seemed wrong choice for this song.Mohit's voice is very soothing and natural in the song.

Tera Intezaar(Revisited)
Reeky Dev’s revisited Tera Intezaar is not bad.His vocals are impressive that mixes well to the resounding DJ antics. The song sounds similar to Tu jaane Na from Ajab Prem ki Ghazab kahani. It is difficult to pickup which is the best original or revisited. However this song may not be featured in the movie and may be simply restricted in back ground considering the fate of revisited songs.

Reaching for the Rainbow

This is just the english version of Sarphira track from the album. The song is sung by Jenice Sobti and Vinnie Hutton. It is completely soothing . The song may not be that much of a hit considering our audience prefer hindi tracks only. The trend may just pickup by including atleast one english track in every album . However the hindi version sounds best compared to English may be due to Neeraj's vocals.

Overall, Love u Mr Kalakaar is decent album and does meet one's expectations from the flick considering it is no big budget extravaganza. The songs are simple and sweet .
My pick of Best tracks of the album: Sarphira Sa Hai Dil,Bhoore Bhoore Badal,Tera Intezaar

Tips for effortless singing

No comments on “Tips for effortless singing”
Everybody loves to sing. Some sing in the bathrooms while some sing in front of an audience. But to sing on stage in front of an audience needs a lot of courage, confidence and ofcourse a good voice. To devolop a good voice, we have to practise some vocal exercises and take some precautions. Tips for effortless singing: 1. Wake up early in the morning and do pranayam. But before doing any exercise, exhale out all the negetive energies by exhaling out air from the nose while the stomach should be in. 2. Then inhale slowly while counting and exhale with the same speed. Do this exercise for about 10 minutes. This will increase your stamina. 3. Sing one note higer then the lowest note you can sing. For example, if your last note is Pa of lower octave, then sing Dha of lower octave(mandra saptak). 4. Sustain on that note(swar) for aout 10-15 minutes. This will make your voice sounds heavier as it will add base to it. 5. Gradually sing the higer notes till the note you can comfortably reach. 6. Don't strain your voice by uneccesarily singing high notes that are out of your voice's range. 7. After these exercises, do not drink water for atleast half an hour. Precautions: 1. Do not drink anything cold after singing. 2. After having a meal, don't sing immediately. 3. In the morning, do not sing very high notes as it can damage our vocal chords. 4. Breath properly while singing and sing from the stomach. 5. Be in rhythm while singing any song.

GAME(Hindi) Movie Music Review

Here is the review of the soundtrack of the the upcoming hindi movie Game which boasts of star cast of Abhishek Bachchan, Kangana Ranaut,Anupam Kher, Sarah Jane Dias,Shahana Goswami, Boman Irani and Jimmy Shergill. Game (Hindi) is an upcoming Hindi Action film directed by Abhinay Deo and produced by Farhan Akhtar and Ritesh Sidhwani of Excel Entertainment. The film's title was initially 'Crooked' which was later changed to the new title of 'Game' .The film is supposed to be in the genre as of the Bourne Identity trilogy. The movie will be releasing on Releasing on April 1, 2011

The music has been composed by Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy. Lyrics are penned by Javed Akhtar.

1."It's A Game" (Vishal Dadlani)3:09
Vishal Dadlani's tryst with Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy continues. Vishal and Shankar have become regulars in each others sound tracks. While Shankar mahadevan regularly charts out blockbusters in Vishal Shekhar's tracks  like "Desi Girl" in Dostana, Vishal has been singing regularly in Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy's soundtracks .The title song sung by Vishal Dadlani has elements of thriller. It sounds like soundtrack of Don towards the end which is surprising. For a moment it Sounds like the music notes of GAME might have got swapped with DON2 or may be they picked out the tunes meant to be for Don2 .

2."It's A Game - Reprise"(Sunitha Sarathy) 4:34

The Reprise version continues the momentum of the original title song . Though Sunitha Sarathy does absolute justice to the song it felt like the song belonged to more to the genre of Sunidhi Chauhan or Mahalaxmi Iyer. Sunidhi's vocals would have made the song more engaging .The high pitch vocals of Sunitha aren't impressive

3."Kaun Hai Ajnabi"(Aditi Singh Sharma, Kay Kay )3:58
"Kaun Hai Ajnabi" initially sounds like another song of Don stable escaped to be part of GAME. Later momentum shifts like a mixture of a dance track with a thriller element. It sounds more like a 70s track in parts that used to be the song before the climax where the hero and heroine used to go in disguise to the villains place and indulge in song and dance routine to keep him distracted while they try to rescue the victims. The song definitely scores among those to remember whatever be the mixture. Kay Kay comes with a typical song which does  not add anything special to his track record.

4."Maine Yeh Kab Socha Tha"(Shaan, Anusha Mani, Loy Mendonca)5:15
The song starts with a piano rendition which may be the key background score to love track in the movie. It is a pleasant love song while the song starts on a lighter note with mostly the piano recital. The orchestration of this song is quite different and typical considering this is the lonely love track in this album. However we do not miss the mystery element in this song also. Looks like no song is left in the track to remind the listener repeatedly of its mystery element.Towards the middle there are some of the added elements of Mitwa from Kabhi Alvida Na Kehna. The song stands out as the lonely love track. This may not be the best track of Shaan but it is among many those passable ones

5."Mehki Mehki"(Shreya Ghoshal, Kshitij)4:05
The song is surprising considering it is meant to be an item number. But the rendition by Shreya Ghoshal sounds more like a copy 'Kaisi Paheli Zindagani ' of  from 'Parineeta'. The saving grace is Kshitij in this song. Shreya's vocals make the song more intense in wrong places sounding like the a sad song

6."Kaun Hai Ajnabi - Remix"(Aditi Singh Sharma, Kay Kay)3:44
The original was better though the remix is meant to be what a change of the orchestration beats. It is purely due to the tune that the song stands out. One can be expected to hum the original better. The remix is no more than a soundtrack meant for the dancefloor.

7."Mehki Mehki - Remix" (Shreya Ghoshal, Kshitij)3:41
The remix sounds more better than original considering the damage done by Shreya's intense singing in some places in original. The beats and orchestra in this song dilutes that effect and somewhat save the composition. People can believe the song to be an item song only for the remix.
Though not the best soundtrack of this kind from Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy, Game is an engaging work from the composer trio.

Songs that Stand out: Kaun Hai Ajnabi, It's A Game

Verdict: 3.5 out of 5 stars
