We quite often speak the term when we speak in general that the White men left India but they left English behind them in India. Some of us even are of the opinion that since the Englishmen left our country back in 1947, there language should also not be used in India. Let's us discover in this article how far such comments are true and relevant in this article
.
For me, if anyone of us thinks to stop the usage of the English language in India it would be a very negative thing to do and I would say such a mentality is very negative and would prove disastrous in the long and smooth running of our country. I agree that the English was introduced in India by Lord Macaulay as a very selfish motive because it was a stunt taken by the British government to that it would benefit them in the long run. They wanted the Indians to know this language so that we could serve them in their purposes of development and industrialization.
English to an extent has its influence in our culture. Our youngsters, like our sons and daughters are so much influenced with this culture that to a certain extent they are reluctant to follow our own culture and ethics. They take a great pride among themselves to prove the fact that they are very much influenced by the western culture. Today we find our youth to remain ignorant even after passing out college and universities. But the question I want to ask here is that, Is English to be blamed for such a menace or scenario? I would definitely say NO to the answer to this question because I think it is not the English language responsible for this but our present system of education which supposed to bear a big defect in it.
Now, let us give the topic of this article a second thought, that is, Should English language be stopped in India. If we think a bit wisely, neutrally and unbiased on the topic we would not support that thing to happen because English is necessary today for one and all. English language and the thinking generated in the minds by this language has done immense good to India in the past and it is doing good in the present and undoubtedly it will also do a whole lot of good in the future. I said English did good to us in the past because our great sons of India and freedom fighters who fought for our freedom of our motherland were nursed, nurtured and brought up in the lap of English thought and culture. They were inspired by the freedom struggle of America and France to a huge extent.
Moreover, english is the widely spoken language throughout the world. It is even the national language of countries like U.S.S.R, Canada, New Zealand etc. My question is how one will communicate with these countes without the basic knowledge of English and if we don't communicate with them then how will we move ahead with new ideas, technologies and innovations. Perhaps we won't be able to sustain and survive in this competitive world.
English is not our native language and it is still a minority language in India but yes, it is the language of our national affairs and the use of this language is considered to be prestigious. If we get ourselves devoid of the use of this language then how we or our youngsters will come to know about the greats like William Shakespeare, John Milton and Bernard Shaw. So friends we should always think twice before talking about stopping the use of such a language as English in India.
