In the 80's and 90's India suffered from brain drain because of lack of infrastructure and promising industries for the youngsters. These young graduates were lured by the huge salaries and comfortable life abroad.During the first few years of this decade(2000-2005),the reason for brain drain was surprisingly different. The graduates going to other countries could simply not get into any indian company because of the high homegrown talent available. For means of livelihood, engineers and other graduates set out to US to atleast get some stable job. Then reversebrain drain started. The Infosys training centre at Mysore is steadily increasing its foreign head count. Now with the US and other developed countries suffering from economic recession I feel that many Indians abroad will come back to their motherland and serve their country which would ultimately make India a superpower to reckon with in the years to come.
My ways to diminish the effects of brain drain:
When brightest of minds having greatest of potentials leave their countries in wich they have got their skills sharpened. There cant be any thng worse.I believe. Our B-schools and other institutions shud also adopt the 'idea' which is prevalent in westerncountries. That is A Contract between instituitons and students that the students would serve their native countries for a certain minimum period of time after getting degrees from the said institution before looking for any job abroad.
why it should be stopped? there cannot be death of skill person because of brain drain. Places will be filled by someone of equivalent talent. There are lots of people in india who doesnot get the job inspite of having good knowledge because of reservation, neck to neck competition, so there is no wrong if these people goabroad and make a good livinfg for themself. Brain drain has some +ve aspect aswell, Take the example of Kalpana Chawala she went to US and worked for NASA. Her good work was not only beneficial for US butfor the entire Nation. Friends do u think Kalpana would have achieved such height in India as she has achieved for working for NASA. Inorder to stop thebrain drain we should develop the Infrastructure available in India then automatically these problem will stop. So obviously we should not take brain drain as problem.
Effects of brain drain:
In no ways brain drain good for india. india is loosing many talented people who go in foreign countries for better avenues. It is sorry to see that countries like the states purchase manpower from india and are excelling from us in various issues. For the problem of brain drain the value of GDP contributed by education is still hovering at 2.5%.For a developing country like India education is an important coordinate which should be laid emphasis on.
Brain drain is not viable for India in any way.our institutions produce the brightest minds & these people go to serve some other country.look at NASA today, half the people working there are in some way related to India.Think about it friends,if they would have worked for our organisations like ISRO,DRDO,HAL,etc our country would have been atleast a step ahead in this field than what it is now.In my opinion there is no harm if people goabroad for studying, but no matter where they should come back here and work here.In short, brain drain should be stopped.
It is good to show the things that people should not go abroad to work.Very good. But tell me how many people are there who want to loose the opportunity to work in high tech environment.Brain Drain is effective when they don't think of their country but once you go out and make proper use of chance given to you and even fromabroad or after returning to home you are implementing those things in our working routine to enhance the output then what is wrong?Nothing wrong,at least from my point of view.
Today one side we are talking of globalisation and another side we are talking of Brain Drain then imbalance will automatically come.If we are earning in one company that is on our soil but meant for some other country then it is good butfor the same country if we are working on foreign soil then it is?Today India is coming into world Picture due to IT and IT based industries and one very good example is outsourcing then isn't itBrain Drain. If not then the person who is responsible for bringing these opportunities should also not be called a victim of Brain Drain.Should he/she ?Also we are also attracting the foreigners from other countries too who work for us and create opportunities for us so called reverse Brain Drain.
If talented people are not given high technical enviornment then how can we say they will do something for our country. It is better let them go outside india learn new things and come back and implement these new techniques in our country.Today every year thousands of s/w engineers are coming out do you think our markt is capable of giving them high salaries &long term job assurance,of course not. Then what is The use of these people in our country?brain drain is not bad unless one thinks of his country also, in the sense that after earing money outside one is ready to get back to his own country and use it for country's development
The problem is simple. There aren't enough permanent-resident visas available each year for skilled workers and their families. And there is a limit of fewer than 10,000 visas that can be issued to immigrants from any single country. Socountries with the largest populations such as India and China are allocated the same number of visas as Iceland and Mongolia. As such the IITian's who were goingabroad for serving developed countries are now planning to stay here itself and serve our motherland. The global Indian diaspora is a vast pool of knowledge that we must tap, especially in the sciences. We must try and attract the best and brightest of our scientistsabroad to return home and participate in the adventure of building a knowledge-based economy here.
But,This call for reverse brain drain is just a eye wash, there is no value for meritocracy here. With the kind of policies like mind less reservation Mr Manmohan Singh and Co. are following, i think there would even more greaterbrain drain. Brilliant people need the right kind of envirnoment to grow, and currently here in india only vote bank politics matters.
I guess reverse brain drain is a very old phenomenon since medieval ages.Remember we used to study abt foreign travellers like fahrein, hiuen tsang coming to india and learning about all our weaponry and administrative tactics and then use it in thier homeland for betterment .eEen the illustrious martial arts was copied by chinese monks from the extreme parts of south india. This had helped them immensely and the invention of rockets by tippu sultan's army was copied and modified by westerners.so what i mean to say is that the people goingabroad should gather knowledge as much as they can, but they should consider it thier duty to return back to thier homeland and help the nation progress.
Brain-Drain : A New Type of Slavery
When it cost us so much to free ourselves from colonial slavery, how is it that this kind of slavery we call 'BRAIN DRAIN' passes unchallenged, and we take no action against it?
On his visit of India, Nobel prize-winner Sir Andrew Huxley, who is was President of the Royal Society in London, delivered a lecture at the Indian National Science Academy "Science and Politics" in which he stressed the fact that at that time it was only the USA and Russia who had the resources to do really advanced research in Science, and that although Britain was doing good work in various fields, this had to be with the collaboration of several Western Europeancountries. He pointed out how ironical it was that though the developing countries were still so far behind the rest of the world in scientific research, their much-needed talent was rapidly being drained off by the industrializedcountries.
The elder generation sacrificed a great deal to be able to out Western usurpers from their country and it is now with grief and incredulity that they see the brightest members of the present generation flock to the West, ostensibly to do well for themselves, but stubbornly refusing to face up to the fact that by allowing their talents to be exploited, they enable the West to retain its world leadership.
What is wrong. In India, there cannot be dearth of skill person because of brain drain. Places will be filled by someone of equivalent talent. there are lots of people in india who doesnot get the job inspite of having good knowledge because of reservation, neck to neck competition, so there is no wrong if these people go abroad and make a good livinfg for them self. Brain drain has some +ve aspect aswell, Take the example of Kalpana Chawala she went to US and worked for NASA. Her good work was not only beneficial for US but for the entire Nation. Friends do u think Kalpana would have achieved such height in India as she has achieved for working for NASA. Inorder to stop the brain drain we should develop the Infrastructure available in India then automatically these problem will stop. So obviously we should not take brain drain as problem .
I don't feel there is anything wrong in a person going abroad for job.The simple reason is that every person has some aspirations for a better future.Everyone wants a better working place and wants that his work is given enough value. So if we have to stop brain drain first thing necessary is create suitable working atmosphere where you can get a job satisfaction. Its not just money which attracts the youths towards abroad. Also we don't even have good tech jobs(other than IT) out here.
For example:
If an engineer doesn't get a tech job, what is the use of him getting all the degrees in his engg. stream.I know, Most of the engineering students from the premiere institutes in India don't get a job in their respective areas and what they have to do is being satisfied with a software job or search for management job or go abroad .So it means basically India don't need them.So if government wants to really prevent brain drain instead of giving lectures over ethics etc. They should start working to improve the infrastructure.
In my view, the term brain drain associated to the indian population has become outdated. i feel the relationship has become more symbiotic. nowadays, outsourced jobs provide the profit margin of the hour. also, it depends on the person's motive of making a career. a career is different from a job. people who go for a job abroad prefer coming back to our country as it is only to suffice their financial needs. i think the former of making a career should be taken into account. yes, it is bitter truth that the "career" oriented facilities offered by the country is not upto the standards needed by the people pursuing it.
I would put that india is not facing an economic brain drain but an "academic brain drain".lots of people are intersted to move into a job rather than getting versatile in their area of interest.
Indian research activities are dwindling at an alarm rate. the responsibility is on all of us to improve it. no use of blaming the government. anyways, they were sufficiently occupied in passing salary hike bill to their colleagues and now resting on. I would like to conclude saying that india will be drained of brains itself,if sufficient steps are not taken to promote the interest of pursuing research amongst indian youth.
Well brain drain really kills india right now the worst part is that the best brains of our country migrating to other country is atrocious. Its the soul fault of our country itself. The very reason for this is better standard of living in abroad , job satisfaction and the better sal abroad . In abroad professionals get the right field and platform to boost up their carrer. The companies present their are more globally recognised and tend to give a better exposer to the practical world. On the other side if we see india most of the jobs out here are restricted to the IT field well the major fault in our country is that we indians never tend to invest in research and devlopment because of that many scientists, and emiment professors flee to us or other devloped countries. This is a huge setback to our country. If we use those brains and devlop new technology intead of buying it for millions of dollars from deloped country it would definetly boost up our economy .The solution is very simple and clear invest more revenue in R&D. paying more to scientists and other professionals and devlop technogy is our own .The other way to sove this problem is to devlop infrastructure in our country so that companies invest in our country and hire professionals and give them a field .
speaking on academic brain drain, i feel that it need not necessarily happen outside the country. it is happening within the for visible walls surrounding us. The quality of faculties available in our country is fast deteriorating. so the youth prefer taking offers abroad. even the faculties prefer teaching in the foreign universities rather than the home grown ones. i feel the government interferes too much in the academics and premier institutions have a political shadow in them which makes the whole situation worse. this situation should definitely be pondered upon.
if the government has to stop the brain drain then it should better try to make all the universities in each state of global standards and give the facilities of global standards, instead of spending revenues for reservation and expandin the existing iits.It should spend its revenue in the research (R&D) and make each and every institute a research institute.See if there are more and more institute of global standards then there will be no need for reservation and competion and no brain drain. If the government create opportunity then there is no need to go abroad.Brain Drain has its positivity too. Where would millions of Indians live if they all came back to India? It would definetly be over crowded and populated than it already is.
I think that brain drain has it's own associated positives and negatives. Am sure, not all Indians who left for greener pastures, have gone to earn green dollars for themselves..There could have been infrastructural hurdles or lack of opportunities for growth.
Benefit of Brain Drain:
The loss due to brain drain is still not compensated by having influential Indo-Americans, again since they're American first and I guess that the first and second generations of Americans born there would be a Lot more American than India. It's only the generation that goes there that would retain its Indian-ness.Having most of the smartest people go out and a few come back to set themselves back up home. A lot of the doctors, engineers and many scientists are in countries abroad. Surely this help create ties betweem various departments of various institutes, no doubt. But still, I guess a lot more would've been possible had these very same peopel still been here. It's merely one of the benefits I feel. The loss is not compensated.
Very Complex issue:
I feel the main problem with india is social security. Nothing else.Hight rape rate, Politician sons going amok, its all there. I am a college student, and a lot of times i see fights over girls, over money, or just stupid issues like ego.How safe do i feel in college to tell you the truth not much. People are always boasting i am so and so's son.Meet me here at X o clock i will show you who i am.Remember you just cant stop them from going abroad. They feel that they will feel more safe, the enviroments there for buisness are much better than here. Why do you think they are so successfull there. They are given a fair and encourageing enviroment there. It is true that BRAIN drain is bad for a country. Take african countries for an example. The european countries brain drain their doctors now the countries are being screwed beyond belief. Most developing countries will always support brain drain, that is what keeps them ahead of the rest of the countries.I am not totally against brain drain every human should be given a chance and if these people going abroad find that they are being given a chance what can we say. Remember people decision to QUIT india in an individual decision and looking at each case separately we may find their reason, or jutification to be valid. Something that you may have also do in those same conditions. We just cant brand them as anti patriots, selfish people. Quite a few NGOS in india are being managed and run by indians who live abroad. Dont you feel that is national service? My message is people who decide to quit indian do so, but please dont quit being indian. Remember who you are. Where you are from.If you look at the new breed of brain drains from india. Like there was an award winning computer animator who was ready to offer his expertise to indian companies at subsidied rates. No other country was to get this benefit. This is the kind of indians i am proud of. Who will always remember where their roots are. Who know thier true identity. As proud INDIANS.
Then the good guys will come back again, take over and live happily ever after.
Let the nature take its course
