Soil erosion is a process in which the washing away of the fine and fertile top most layers of the soil covers occurs by natural agents.
- Interface: Man interfered and did over-grazing by animals, deforestation, faulty agricultural practices and road construction in hilly terrains. All this led to the unprecedented devastation in the form of extensive gullying, land slides and flash-floods.
- Shifting cultivation: The shifting cultivation is known as jhumming. This is extensively practiced by the tribal population in the north-eastern India. This had led to alarming rates of soil erosion.
- Deforestation: Due to population growth the country has witnessed unprecedented activity of deforestation. So the country lost valuable forests over 25 million hectares between 1950 and 1980. This has been causing huge flood flows and great havoc to the crop lands and reservoirs by sitting.
- Construction of major reservoirs: Gradually these reservoirs are sitting up fast and reducing thin water storage capacity.
From the above, we can conclude that soil erosion is certainly a man-made disaster.
