It is an age old questions whether students and politics should go together. Much might be said on both sides. Given the present political set up, it is wise for the students to stay away fom politics. But students can also make politics noble it they join the fray in the right spirit.
The main business of a student is to learn things. During his school or college days he has to devote all his energies to his studies. Nothing should divert his attention. But the student of the present day is the future citizen of the nation. The progress of the nation depends on him. Therefore this stage is cricial in the devalopment of any person. It is now that he has to devalop the qualities of leadership. This is where politics come into picture.
For anyman political awareness comes as a student. During the freedom movement students fallowed the call of the mahatma and gave up their studies. Many young students sacrificed their bright career for the sake of the motherland. They were promted by sence of patriotism. After indipendence it was felt that students should have an idea of political leadership. Elections to students' unions are held in colleges and universities with this idea. But the results are not encouraging. There are many students' organisations. But most of these act as appendages to some political party or other.
Today politics are self-centred. Students are becoming puppets in the hands of vested interests. Political parties drag them into unhelthy politics. They use them to conduct strikes and agitations. Sometimes students lose their lives in these struggles. This is sad state of affairs. Students have to realise this. They should not fall into the trap of self-centred politicians.
Students should learn about politics without participating in them. They should known what is happening around them. Knowledge of the world is a part of education. Today students have the right to vote. They have to elect the right leader. If at all they enter into politics they should try to make them clean and healthy. They should not be selfish and should not try to serve their own ends. The right kind of political leadership can alter the face of the nation. Students have the ability to create such a nation by joining politics.
