Some common Indian birds
Birds have always interested mankind. Who is not attracted by their beautiful tints and delightful sports? For ages, their songs have inspired poets and filled men with a desire to copy them. If birds were not our allies in the ware against insects they would make our life impossible. Fortunately, India is a land of excellent birds. The following are some of common Indian birds.
- Peacock – The peacock is our national bird. It is pride of our country. No birds in the world have as royal in appearance as the peacock. One can see its real beauty on a rainy day. When there are clouds in the sky the peacock with its crown of crest, spreads its brilliant colored long tail like a fan and starts its delightful dance before its pea-hen peacock’s red blue and green feathers have pretty spots shaped like an eye.
Peacock eats seeds, insects and also small snakes. They can be easily caught by looking fixedly in their eyes. Peacock adds beauty to our homes. They are used in sports, as suppliers of material for embroidery work. Poets also like them for peacock are birds of love, beauty and joy.
- The parrot – the parrot is another highly valued birds of tropics, it is liked for its pretty colors and ability to copy human speech. Some ancient queens kept parrots in ivory and gold cages. Parrots are extremely beautiful birds. In a zoo one can see green parrots, red parrots and blue and yellow parrots. All parrots have strong curved and pointed beaks. They use then in cutting hard seeds, nuts and fruits and in climbing trees.
Parrots have to stay life long with their matters. They also like men who feed them but bite strangers, parrots add beauty to our homes, guard then at night, and serve as pleasant companions. When trained they can say ‘Hello’! “Sita Ram’ and sing small poems. This is why they are too sweet to us.
- The pigeon - the pigeon too is an interesting bird. It is liked every where for its beautiful tints and speedily fights. The pigeon is our “First Air Mail Deliverer” for in olden times it carried letters from one place to another through air. We can find pigeons in hills, fields, wells and old buildings. All pigeons have small heads and narrow bells. Young pigeons are fed in their mother’s milk but grown ups feed on seeds. Pigeon do not mind if any one goes near them. They can fly at a speed of 60 miles per hour. That is why they are also used in races, in ornamenting homes and as food too.
Birds are our pleasant companions. Keeping then as pets is highly useful to us. Offering of our love and care is not only good for the birds but it also helps our own emotional development. Thus friendship with birds is a double blessing.
