It is a fact of life that the rate at which we are consuming the resources of this planet and we are very fast moving to a scenario when the world would face a serious resource crunch. We are just not consuming but devouring them to the point of almost borrowing from our next few generations. Thus the relevance of the question of sustainable development is debated in the media and other for a. It is incontrovertibly true that the problem of “global warming “ has assumed to be a “global warning” is all the result of our unsustainable life style. Just think of food which is a primary necessity for all of us and to feed a burgeoning population . Towards the end of raising farm productivity our farmers have been forced to change their traditional methods of farming and adopt modern farming method which call for extensive use of chemical fertilizers and undertaking operations resulting excessive emission of carbon into our environment.
Our cities are getting congested with the passage of time and constructions of homes and houses do not leave sufficient space to accommodate the requirements of “Kitchen Garden” which can easily take care of the needs for vegetables of a family. We are completely dependent on outside supply and sources located at faraway places. The vegetables are brought in huge trucks and other vehicles which consume huge quantity of fossil fuels thus adding to the carbon emission problem.
In the United States a strong movement has been launched to promote organic farming and the focal theme of this movement is to eat healthy and at the same time ensuring the health of our environment which is in grave danger. The protagonists of this movement organize workshops on cheese making, gardening with edible plants and teach how to grow our own food. We too need such a movement to educate the people in this regard.
