There is a very special bond between students and a counsellor, it is a unique and safe way for the students to relate and support. It is a bond in which the counsellor employs objective wisdom and gives the student an opportunity to mature and build self-esteem. Counsellors help students to understand and care for themselves in self-directed ways which the students feel are appropriate for their needs and always having their support available to their learning, emotional well-being and maturation. Students’ counselors work with students in a variety of settings and help them to cope with an array of concerns, including their academic, social and family lives.
Before I discuss about “students counseling”, I would like to highlight “why counselling?” There are many who believe that, one need to see a counsellor only if an individual has any insurmountable problem or something has happened, or is unable to cope with the situation. But in reality, many people see a counselor to help them to sort out something that’s worrying them. A counselor offer offers confidentiality, genuineness and unconditional acceptance and helps the person to look at things more clearly. Many a time, a person is in the middle of a situation or crisis and needs someone to confide. In such a situation counseling really helps them to cope with the situation.
“Student counseling” plays an important role in promoting the positive development of the students and helping them to make responsible choices as they move into their teen years and adolescence. College counsellors have been effective at reducing bullying and helping students with family problems and other problems disturbing them. In addition, It is seen that studies with comprehensive counseling programs, found that students earned higher grades, had more positive relationships with teachers, and felt more satisfied with their education.
Thus, we can say that student counselling offers a student, a change to understand feelings and change behavior problems with the support of peers with similar concerns. It helps the student to come out of any difficult situation which a student may face particularly at a time of transition from school life to college life.
