What is Parts of Speech ?
In English language, words are divided in to different kinds or classes. It is called Parts of Speech. According to their use or according to the work they do in a sentence, we can classify them in to eight .
- Noun
- Adjective
- Pronoun
- Verb
- Adverb
- Preposition
- Conjunction
- Interjection
Now let us try to understand each of them in detail.
- Noun:
A noun is a word used as the name of a person, place, or thing; as,
Muzijurabi is a great writer
Calcutta is on the Hoogly
The rose smells sweet
Car runs fast
Remember: The word thing includes (a) all objects that we can see, hear, taste, or smell; and (b) some thing that we can think of, but cannot perceive by the senses. - Adjective
You can use adjectives to add some thing to the meaning of a noun; as,
He is a brave boy
There are ten girls in this class. - Pronoun
Pronoun is used instead of a noun
Ravi is absent, because he is ill
I saw the cat where you had left it - Verb
Verb is used to tell some thing about some person. place, or thing; as'
I wrote a letter to my lover
He is a doctor
Iron and copper are useful metals - Adverb
It is a word used to add some thing to the meaning of a verb, an adjective, or another adverb: as,
He played well
This flower is very beautiful - Preposition
Preposition is used with a noun or a pronoun to show how the person or thing denoted by the noun or pronoun stands in relation to some thing else; as,
There is a cow in the garden
I am fond of films
The cat sat under the table - Conjunction
It is a word which is used to join words or sentences;as,
Raju andAji are brothers
I ran fast, but missed the bus - Interjection
It is a word used to express some sudden feeling; as,
Hurrah ! we have won the game.
Alas ! she is dead.
