What do you see when you look up at the sky at night?
You see the moon. You also see many twinkling stars.
The moon, through smaller than planets, look bigger because it is near to the earth. Moon is earth’s satellite. A satellite is a celestial body orbiting around a planet. Moon is a natural satellite of the earth.
Earth has only one natural satellite. It is the moon which goes round our planet. The moon reflects sunlight.
You see the full moon on the night of Purnima, or the full moon day. Thereafter, the visible portion of the moon becomes smaller and smaller, and 15 days later, on Amavasya, or the new moon day, the moon is not seen at all. A few days later, you notice a crescent- shaped moon. Then night after night the portion of the moon that can be seen goes on increasing and 15 days later you see the full moon again. The increase and decrease in size of the visible part of the moon is called waxing and waning of the moon. Its different visible portions are called the phases of the moon.
The different phases or changes in the size of the moon are caused by the revolution of the moon round the earth.
· There is neither air nor water on the moon. The sky is black.
· It is very hot during day and very cold during the night
· Plains, mountains and hallows called creators are found on the moon
· The moon pulls objects towards it, just like the earth. But the gravitational pull of the moon is far less.
· The moon’s gravity is 1/6 that of the earth. You could jump about 6 times higher on the moon. You weight on moon will be only 1/6 of that on earth
· There is no life on the moon.
